Shaquille Powell is the focus of today's Duke Football Summer Spotlight. The 5-10, 205-pound native of Las Vegas, Nev., enters his third season as a key member of Duke's running game and special teams units.DURHAM, N.C. -- Junior running back
Powell, who received the program's Sonny Falcone Iron Duke Award for his year-round commitment to strength training and conditioning, is charted as Duke's starting running back heading into the 2014 preseason. Last season, he rushed 62 times for 344 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 5.55 yards per rush. He also caught eight passes for 90 yards and one touchdown and flashed his big-play ability in a 48-30 win over No. 24 Miami when he broke off a 33-yard touchdown run.
Powell will team with redshirt senior Josh Snead and redshirt freshman Joseph Ajeigbe to make up Duke's three-headed monster at running back. Powell possesses an every-down back skillset with the ability to run, catch and protect in the passing game. He will also figure heavily into Duke's special teams plans covering kickoffs and punts.
Powell is one of 43 letterwinners returning to Duke in 2014. The Blue Devils open the season on August 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at http://www.goduke.com/footballtix or by calling (919) 681-BLUE.
