DURHAM, N.C. – In the first exhibition action of the 2014 campaign, the 18th-ranked Duke women’s soccer team registered a 2-0 blanking of 14th-ranked South Carolina Thursday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The teams played three 30-minute periods with unlimited substitutions.

Duke opened the match starting four rookies and a total of seven freshmen and sophomores as head coach Robbie Church enters his 14th season with the Blue Devils.  Senior Kelly Cobb opened the match with the first shot of the contest that was saved in the 12th minute.

The Blue Devils were able to get on the board at the 17:33 mark of the first period as senior Katy Colas sent in a corner kick into the box.  South Carolina All-America keeper Sabrina D’Angelo grabbed the ball with two hands over her head, but one of her teammates bumped D’Angelo and the ball fell back over the goal line for an own goal.

At the end of the first period, Duke held a 1-0 advantage with both teams featuring one shot each.

Both teams attempted one shot over the next 30 minutes of the second period.  Duke sophomore Toni Payne attempted one that went wide left.

South Carolina opened the third period with two shots over the first nine minutes of action that went high.  After a Gamecock foul, freshman Ashton Miller sent a free kick into the box that bounced near the feet of fellow freshman Casey Martinez.  A native of Towson, Md., Martinez broke to her left and fired a left-footed shot that hit the right corner of the net to put Duke ahead 2-0 at the 83:21 mark.

In the 88th minute, Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper EJ Proctor went after a ball out of the box and South Carolina’s Raina Johnson rocketed a shot that clanked off the crossbar, while adding another attempt that went wide right less than two minutes later.

For the match, South Carolina outshot Duke, 6-3.

Three different goalkeepers played all three periods with redshirt junior Ali Kershner starting the first period.  Redshirt senior Meghan Thomas played the second and Proctor came in the third period.  Neither keeper had a save for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will close exhibition action Saturday, Aug. 16 at UNC Wilmington with a 6:00 p.m., kick time.  Duke opens the regular season Friday, Aug. 22 in the UNC Nike Classic against Ohio State at 5:00 p.m., in Chapel Hill, N.C.

•    Duke started four freshmen – Ashton Miller, Morgan Reid, Imani Dorsey and Schuyler DeBree.
•    The Blue Devils were without starters Christina Gibbons and Rebecca Quinn, who are playing in the U-20 World Cup in Canada, with the U.S. and Canada teams, respectively.
