  • Duke opened its 94th season today. The Blue Devils are now 54-37-3 in season openers.
  • Duke dropped its first game vs.a I-AA opponent today. It entered the game with an 8-0 record vs. I-AA teams.
  • Including today’s contest, Duke leads the all-time series vs. Richmond, 9-2.
  • Today’s attendance was 27,456, Duke’s largest opening day home crowd since drawing 30,224 vs. East Carolina on Sept. 2, 2000.
  • Sophomore LB Michael Tauiliili had a team-best 11 tackles today vs. Richmond. It marked the fourth time in his last five games that he reached the 10-tackle plateau.
  • Senior CB John Talley registered one pass breakup today and now has 26 in his career. The 26 PBUs are the sixth-most in Duke history. Immediately ahead in fifth place is Lamar Grant (1996-99) with 28.
  • Sophomore WR Raphael Chestnut established career highs in receptions (7) and receiving yards (73) today.
  • Senior LB Jeramy Edwards registered seven tackles today, including a sack for -8 yards. He now has 2.5 career QB sacks.
  • Eight Blue Devils made their first starts at their respective positions today — RT Fred Roland, RG Rob Schirmann, LG Zach Maurides, FB Tielor Robinson, TE Nick Stefanow, QB Marcus Jones (made four starts at WR in 2005), NG Vince Oghobaase and SS Glenn Williams.
  • Eleven Duke newcomers saw their first game action today vs. the Spiders — QB Thaddeus Lewis, WR Jabari Marshall, FB Tielor Robinson (played at Army in 2003 and 2004), NG Vince Oghobaase, FB Brandon King, K/P Alex Feinberg, DT Norman Gee, QB Kevin Cronin, CB Leon Wright, FS Catron Gainey, and DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk.
  • Four true freshmen saw playing time today vs. Richmond — QB Thaddeus Lewis, FB Brandon King, CB Leon Wright and FS Catron Gainey.
  • Lewis, a freshman QB, saw extensive action today for Duke. He was 15-of-24 for 148 yards.
  • Duke’s defense allowed its fewest points (13) since a 16-13 victory vs. Clemson on Nov. 13, 2004.
  • Duke was last shut out on Sept. 10, 2005, at Virginia Tech (45-0).
  • Duke returns to action Sept. 9 with its first ACC game of the season at Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for noon in Winston-Salem.
