EL PASO, Texas – Senior Julian Suri opened play at the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Monday with back-to-back rounds 70 (-1) at the El Paso Country Club. With his two round total of 140, Suri enters the final round on Tuesday tied for 18th place.
The 54-hole tournament has one of the nation’s most competitive fields, including seven of the top 50 collegiate players according to the most recent Golfweek poll. In addition to 24th-ranked Suri, the field is highlighted by No. 4 Justin Thomas (Alabama), No. 6 Patrick Rodgers (Stanford) and 2012 NCAA Individual Champion Thomas Pieters of Illinois.
Suri opened the tournament with a fairly routine round, making birdies at the first and ninth holes, and stringing together seven pars in between to fire a 34 on the front nine. Suri then continued his consistent round by parring the next eight holes before bogeying the 18th to complete the round with a one-under 70.
Suri started the second round with a birdie on the No. 2, before making five straight pars. On the eighth hole, Suri made a bogey, but responded with a birdie on the par five ninth to make the turn with a 35. Suri dropped a shot with a bogey on No. 10, but battled back making birdies on four of the next five holes. Suri was unable to keep the momentum however, and closed the round with a bogey on No. 16 and a double-bogey on No. 18 to post a second round of 70.
Suri, a native of St. Augustine, Fla., owns a 71.5 average this fall, tallying three top-10 finishes in four tournaments including a victory at the Rod Myers Invitational. A 2012 PING NCAA All-American, Suri has played 53 career rounds at Duke of par or better golf including nine of his 14 rounds this fall. Suri, a three-time PING All-East Region and All-ACC Academic team selection, currently ranks fifth on Duke’s all-time list with a 72.49 career stroke average. He also ranks tied for third at Duke with 41 career under-par rounds, fifth in top 20 finishes (24), tied for fifth in top 10 finishes (16) and tied for sixth in top 5 finishes (nine).
Kevin Penner of UNLV and Cory Whitsett of Alabama enter the final round with a share of the lead at 11-under par, while Kent State’s Corey Conner is tied with Max Homa of California and Cameron Peck of Texas A&M at eight-under par. Suri will finish play at the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic on Tuesday with an 18-hole final round.
