DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team was tabbed No. 3 in the second Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings of the year, after downing William & Mary in their home opener Jan. 19. The Blue Devils were listed as No. 3 in the first rankings of 2013, and also concluded the 2011 and 2012 seasons in the same spot.
The Blue Devils kicked off the dual-match season with a 7-0 sweep over William & Mary, highlighted by the duo of senior Mary Clayton and sophomore Ester Goldfeld cruising past the third-ranked team from William & Mary of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans, 8-1. With the win, Duke is 16-0 in home openers under head coach Jamie Ashworth.
Duke is one of six teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) ranked in the top 25 of the ITA poll, which is the second most of any conference in the country behind only the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with seven. In addition to the Blue Devils, the ACC is represented by North Carolina (No. 8), Miami (t-9), Virginia (No. 12), Clemson (No. 20) and Georgia Tech (No. 22).
The Blue Devils return to the courts Jan. 26-27 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Duke is set to face Wisconsin in the first round of the tournament Saturday at 10 a.m.
