DURHAM, N.C. – Duke placekicker Ross Martin and punter Will Monday were named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Placekicker and Punter Trophy Watch Lists, the website announced.

Martin, a 5-9, 185-pound sophomore, was a Preseason All-America third team selection by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview after hitting 20-of-23 field goals and 46-of-47 point after attempts in 2012. Martin scored a school-record 106 points in his inaugural season while hitting 7-of-8 field goal attempts of at least 40 yards, including a pair from at least 50 yards.

Monday, a 6-4, 210-pound redshirt sophomore, was also a Preseason All-America choice by Sports Illustrated after averaging an ACC-leading 44.6 yards per punt with just six of his 67 punts landing for touchbacks. A first team All-ACC selection in 2012, he booted a career-long and Belk Bowl-record 79-yard punt against Cincinnati.

Both Martin and Monday were named Freshman All-America in 2012. They are the third and fourth Duke players to earn CFPA preseason recognition this season, joining CFPA Defensive Backs Trophy Watch List selection Ross Cockrell and All-Purpose Performer Award Watch List selection Jamison Crowder.

The CFPA Placekicker and Punter Trophy awards are two of 20 position-specific awards presented by CFPA that encompass the offensive, defensive and special teams aspects of football. All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and twenty-one have been first-round NFL Draft selections.
