DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, sat down with senior Ali McCurdy to learn more about the Tampa, Fla., native. Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Ali McCurdy: I love the competitive atmosphere. I love the people I’m surrounded by every day – the faculty, the coaches, my teammates as well other student-athletes and other students here. And I feel like people really push each other every single day to be overall better people. What is your favorite ‘on the field’ memory?
AM: It was last year’s season opener and the freshmen were here for orientation. It was awesome that we had such a great turnout. I can’t think of a specific play, but I think the overall atmosphere in Cameron with the big crowd was awesome with the home-court feel. What is your favorite ‘off the field’ memory?
AM: Other than the day-to-day little stuff, for sure it would have been this past summer’s trip to Europe. It was an awesome experience to play different international competition as well as getting to know each other and be in a totally new place and experience a different culture as a team. Name three places you would travel to if you could.
AM: I would love to go to the Swiss Alps and ski once I graduate. I would love to go to any tropical island. And I think Africa would be a cool experience – a safari or something like that. Describe yourself in three words.
AM: Competitive, compassionate and hardworking. What are your three favorite things about playing volleyball?
AM: The first would be that never is one point really the same as another. There’s constant change and I like that – you’re always on your toes. The second would be the overall energy that I give off as well as what I receive from my teammates on a big point. I feel like that level of excitement that you gain from volleyball as well as sports in general is hard to describe to somebody. And also the thrill of winning is something that I love.
