DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University assistant women’s soccer coach Carla Overbeck has been selected one of the U.S. Soccer’s All-Time Women’s National Team Best XI, which was revealed this week as the Federation wraps up the celebration of its Centennial anniversary in 2013.

Overbeck, who recently completed her 21st season on the Blue Devil staff, was one of four defenders selected by U.S. Soccer.  Along with Overbeck was Brandi Chastain, Joy Biefeld (Fawcett) and Christie Rampone (Pearce).  Briana Scurry earned the goalkeeper nod, while Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly were the three midfielders selected.  Rounding out the forwards were Mia Hamm, Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach.

Overbeck’s illustrious career includes two FIFA World Championships, an Olympic Gold Medal, and four NCAA Division I Women’s National Championships.  Most famously, she was captain of the 1999 U. S. Women’s National Team which defeated the China in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final at the Rose Bowl in front of 90,000+ people and millions on international television in the largest women’s sporting event in history. It was Overbeck who took and scored the first goal for the American team that day in the penalty kick tiebreaker following the 0 – 0 result of 120 minutes of play.

A 2006 National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Overbeck was a central defender on the 1991 U. S. Women’s Team that won the first FIFA World Championship for Women’s Football, as the tournament was called then.

In 1996 Overbeck won an Olympic Gold Medal in the Atlanta Olympic Games, captaining the team to the Gold Medal victory over China. She was a founding player of the Women’s United Soccer Association, leading the Carolina Courage to the 2002 WUSA Championship. As a collegian she attended the University of North Carolina and won four NCAA Division I Women’s National Championships there.

In an effort to create a fair and reasonable process to determine the All-Time Best XI, U.S. Soccer appointed a committee of soccer historians and former players, coaches, media members and administrators at the National Team level.

Over her 21 years as an assistant coach at Duke, Overbeck has helped lead Duke to 20 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA College Cup appearances.
