Blue Devils Top Elon, Fall at Notre Dame in ACC Opener
The holiday brought the end of the non-conference season and the beginning of ACC play for Duke, as the Blue Devils handled Elon 86-48 in on New Year’s Eve in Greensboro Coliseum and fell 79-77 to ACC newcomer Notre Dame Saturday in South Bend, Ind. The Elon victory saw five players score in double figures, including Andre Dawkins, who hit 5-of-7 three-pointers to lead the offensive onslaught. Jabari Parker also posted his fourth double-double with 12 points and a career-high matching 10 rebounds.

Against the Fighting Irish it was a different story, however, as an inspired Notre Dame team welcomed itself to the ACC by defeating the No.7 Blue Devils in their conference debut. Thanks to a second-half performance from guard Eric Atkins that included 14 points and seven assists, Notre Dame overcame a 10-point deficit on the way to topping the favorite to win the ACC title. Rodney Hood and Quinn Cook could not have done much more as they combined for 49 points and both topped the 20-point plateau. It was Atkins who would lead the charge for Notre Dame, however, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists.

Duke Hosts Georgia Tech in ACC Home Opener
The Blue Devils will return to Cameron Indoor Stadium Tuesday to host Georgia Tech in the ACC home opener. The Blue Devils have won six consecutive home openers dating back to an 87-65 win over Virginia on Jan. 13, 2007. Duke has won five in a row against Georgia Tech and owns a 66-23 record all-time against the Yellow Jackets. The game tips off at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPNU and the Blue Devil IMG Sports Network.

Duke’s Top-10 Streak
With Saturday’s loss to unranked Notre Dame, Duke is in a position to fall out of the Associated Press top 10 for the first time since Nov. 19, 2007. That six-year streak, the second longest in NCAA history behind only UCLA’s run from 1966 to 1976, extended 122 weeks and 225 games in which Duke went 186-39 (.827). Here are some facts about what happened during Duke’s streak:

•    Two men have served as President of the United States.
•    The average national gas price has risen from $2.71 per gallon to $3.31 per gallon.
•    Apple has released three different versions of the iPhone.
•    Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has climbed from 10th to first on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list.
•    Former Duke standouts Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith came to Duke, stayed four years, won a national championship and graduated – nearly three years ago.
•    Duke won a school-record 45 consecutive games in Cameron Indoor Stadium, spanning from Feb. 22, 2009 to Jan. 19, 2012.
•    Eight Blue Devils have been named All-Americans. Eight were drafted into the NBA.
•    The USA Men’s Basketball Team, coached by Krzyzewski, won two Olympic gold medals.
•    The Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox all won World Series titles.
•    Six different classes have graduated from Duke University.
•    LeBron James played his final three seasons for the Cleveland Cavaliers and his first four for the Miami Heat.

Kelly Earning More Playing Time With Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers rookie Ryan Kelly has seen his playing time more than double since Christmas, logging 13-plus minutes in each of his past five games. The increase in playing time is in correlation with Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni taking notice of Kelly’s fundamentally-sound style of play with the Los Angeles head man stating, “He knows how to play defensively and offensively. Defensively, he's the first one to get to the right spot. I think going forward he can keep earning more time. I'm pretty excited about it."

Those are big words from an NBA coaching veteran, and so far Kelly has come through on both ends. He is shooting an efficient .538 (8-of-13) from the field and .600 (3-of-5) from three-point range. He owns a +1.9 plus-minus rating on the season to rank fourth on the Lakers’ roster in his short 11-game stint. And while the future is bright for the former second-round pick, right now Kelly is just waiting patiently on the bench for his name to be called again. “It's the key, you got to hear it on the first time. If you hear it on the second, if they have to call it twice, that means you're probably not listening.”

Miles Plumlee Pulls A Plumlee Versus Memphis
Second-year NBA big man Miles Plumlee is in the midst of a breakout season with the Suns in 2013-14, displaying an all-around solid game that has yielded averages of 9.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. The athletic center showed this past Thursday that he can dunk with the best, however, when he ran the length of the floor, caught a lob from guard Goran Dragic and slammed it behind his head for yet another highlight-reel dunk. The dunk – link below – was part of an eight-point, 12-rebound night for Plumlee, who has vaulted the Suns into third place in the Pacific with a 19-12 record.
