DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s fencing team upended No. 4 Notre Dame, 14-13, and finished 4-1 on the first day of the Northwestern Duals Saturday at Henry Crown Sports Pavilion. The Duke women finished 2-4, and both teams will resume fencing Sunday in the final day of competition.

The Duke men’s epee and saber squads both collected 5-4 wins over the Fighting Irish, while the foils held off Notre Dame 4-5 in the winning effort. Freshman foil Joseph Lam won all three bouts against Notre Dame, while epeeists Dylan Nollner and Alessio Santoro and sabers Charles Copti and Christopher Monti all went 2-1. Santoro dropped his first bout but rebounded to top Notre Dame’s Garrett McGrath in round two before clinching the win with a 5-3 victory over Arthur Le Meur.

The Duke men also took down Cal Tech (23-4), Lawrence (25-2) and Wayne State (25-2) while suffering their only loss at the hands of No. 6 Ohio State. Leading the way were Copti and Monti, who both finished 12-3, and fellow saber Nick Carothers who won 10 bouts. Those three led the saber squad to a 4-1 showing at the day-long competition.

In men’s foil action, freshman Alexander Szilagyi posted a 10-5 record and won eight of his final nine bouts. Ethan Yu won eight of his nine bouts, and Chris Sullivan and Lam combined for a 14-7 ledger as the foils finished 3-2.

For the epees, Ted Cho was near-perfect, posting a 12-1 ledger to lead his squad to a 4-1 performance. Santoro went 9-6 with the aforementioned winning bout against Notre Dame, while Jacob Wiener also finished with winning marks at 7-4.

The women’s team took down Wayne State (21-6) and Tufts (16-11) while falling at the hands of No. 3 Notre Dame (16-11), No. 5 Ohio State (23-9) and Stanford (18-9). The women’s foil squad churned out three victories, including a 7-2 win against Stanford. Leading their charge was freshman Julia Lee, who went 12-6, and Anisha Mukherjee, who finished 9-9.

Taking the strip for the first time this season was junior captain Sarah Collins, who turned in a 12-6 effort in her first meet of the year. Collins went 3-3 against opponents from ranked Ohio State and Notre Dame and 9-3 against the rest of the field.
