DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head coach David Cutcliffe announced on Thursday the promotion of Jeffrey Faris to assistant coach.  Faris, who has served as a graduate assistant coach the past two seasons, will coach the Blue Devil wide receivers.

“I’m excited to say that Jeff Faris will be joining our staff as our wide receivers coach,” Cutcliffe said.  “Jeff’s qualified in every area.  He’s going to be an outstanding coach.  We welcome Jeff and look forward to many contributions for many years.”

Faris, who worked alongside Scottie Montgomery with the wide receivers last season, inherits a receiving unit spearheaded by returning starters Jamison Crowder and Max McCaffrey.  Crowder was a first team all-league pick in 2013 after establishing an ACC single-season record with 108 pass receptions for 1,360 yards and eight touchdowns while McCaffrey had 26 catches for 282 yards and four touchdowns.

Four other lettermen return in Johnell Barnes (15 receptions, 217 yards in 2013), Issac Blakeney (19 receptions, 244 yards, 4 TDs), Anthony Nash (3 receptions, 31 yards) and Ryan Smith (2 receptions, 41 yards).  Duke is the only team in the ACC to boast three returning wide receivers who each caught four or more touchdown receptions last season.

“I am thrilled with this opportunity to represent my alma mater as an assistant coach,” Faris said.  “During my time at Duke, both as a student-athlete and coach, I have been surrounded by tremendous mentors -- most notably Coach Cutcliffe -- who have taught me not only about the game of football, but also the importance of impacting young people.  I am a proud Duke man and the tools I have acquired from this great university and football program will allow me to pursue excellence every day.  I look forward to helping our players make the most out of the myriad of opportunities that this world class institution provides.”

A four-year member of the Duke football program as a defensive back from 2008-11, Faris graduated from Duke in 2011 with a degree in economics.  In 2009, he earned the Mike Suglia Award, an honor presented annually to the sophomore member of the Duke football program who best exemplifies the academic and athletic qualities of the late Mike Suglia.

In 2011, Faris received the Micah Harris Trinity Teammate Award which is presented each season to a Duke player who displays the traits of a true teammate — character, unselfishness, compassion and pride.  In the spring of 2011, Faris was honored by the ACC with a Top 6 For Service award.

Faris, a native of Knoxville, Tenn., earned a master’s degree in economics in 2012 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Christian studies.
