Christina Gibbons will travel to train with the United States U-20 Women’s National Team from April 13-20 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.DURHAM, N.C. – For the second time over the last two months, Duke University freshman
The team is preparing for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup that will take place in Canada in August. The U-20s will play two scrimmages Saturday, April 19, against college teams, taking on UCLA at 12:30 p.m. PT followed by USC at 2:30 p.m. PT.
Gibbons, who is a product of Raleigh, N.C., started all 24 contests in 2013, guided the Blue Devil defense to seven shutouts and played a team-best 2,228 minutes, which was a school-record for a freshman. One of the most consistent players on the team in 2013, Gibbons registered assists against Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament, Virginia Tech and Kennesaw State. She earned TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshmen Best XI, All-ACC Freshman team honors as well as Duke Classic All-Tournament team recognition during the season.
The U.S. will have a domestic camp in May at the Olympic Training Center, followed by trip to Europe in June and then a final domestic training camp in July before heading to Canada where it will face Germany, Ghana and Brazil in Group B play. The 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup runs from Aug. 5-24 in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto.
