SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Duke women’s lacrosse team earned an NCAA second round meeting with eighth-seeded Notre Dame after topping Stanford, 13-8, in Friday’s first round. Opening draw is set for noon Sunday at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend.

Notre Dame Series History
Duke and Notre Dame will meet for the 13th time in program history with the Blue Devils leading the series, 9-3...  The Irish won this year’s regular season meeting, 12-10, Apr. 11 in South Bend in the first ACC contest between the two teams ... Duke is 4-1 all-time when facing Notre Dame on the road ... The teams have not previously met in NCAA Championship action.

Last Time We Met
Trailing by four scores with less than 10 minutes to play, Duke pulled within one but was unable to complete the comeback in a 12-10 setback to Notre Dame Apr. 11 at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer registered three of her five goals inside the final 11 minutes ... The Blue Devils outshot the Irish by a 30-25 margin and held a 15-8 advantage at the draw ... Duke also edged Notre Dame in ground balls but turned the ball over 20 times to 16 turnovers by the Irish ... Duke in the NCAA Championship
The Blue Devils earned the program’s 17th consecutive selection to the NCAA Tournament field ... The Blue Devils are one of five programs with consecutive appearances of 10 or more years, joining Maryland (25), Virginia (19), Northwestern (11) and North Carolina (10) ... Under the direction of head coach Kerstin Kimel, the program is 1-0 all-time in second round play.

Scouting the Irish
Fourteenth-ranked Notre Dame received the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Championship and reached the second round with an 18-4 win over High Point Friday evening in South Bend ... The Irish moved to 10-8 on the season ... Freshman Cortney Fortunato paces the attack with 63 points on 46 goals and 17 assists while Caitlin Gargan is second on the team with 45 points ... Margaret Smith owns a team-high 43 draw controls and has also accounted for 38 caused turnovers ... Liz O’Sullivan and Allie Murray have shared time in goal, combining for a 10.39 goals against average and a .414 save percentage.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke (10-7, 3-4 ACC) topped Stanford by a 13-8 score Friday evening in South Bend to advance in the NCAA Championship ... The Blue Devils were ninth in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer guides the offense with 52 goals and 28 assists while senior Sydney Peterson is second with 40 points and junior Taylor Trimble is third with 39 points ... Returning All-American defender Taylor Virden leads the way in draw controls (60) and caused turnovers (23) ... Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea owns a 9.70 goals against average and a .434 save percentage in the net ... Duke’s balanced attack is outscoring opponents by a 220-164 margin.

Last Time Out
Six different Blue Devils tallied goals and sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea turned in a solid performance in the net to propel Duke to a 13-8 win over Stanford in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday, May 9 ... Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer had a game-high four goals to mark her ninth hat trick of the season and also added two assists ... She teamed with senior Taylor Virden to combine for eight draw controls, while Virden also recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover ... Duryea finished with nine saves in the net ... Alexandra Crerend led the Cardinal with three goals and five draw controls.

Scheduling the Best
Duke’s 2014 slate currently features nine teams ranked in the top 20 of the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... The Blue Devils earned wins over No. 3 North Carolina (Apr. 16), No. 14 Virginia (March 22), No. 18 Louisville (Feb. 9) and No. 19 Stanford (May 9).

Maurer Quarterbacking the Offense
Junior attacker Kerrin Maurer is once again one of the Blue Devils’ most dependable playmakers up front ... She leads the team this spring in points (80), goals (52) and assists (28) and ranks second in draw controls (52) ... The Setauket, N.Y., native ranked second in the ACC and seventh nationally in points per game entering  last week ... Maurer was also third in the conference and 12th nationally in scoring at 3.00 goals per game ... She tallied a career-high six goals in the season opener against Elon (Feb. 7) and has matched her career-best single game output of eight points twice this season ... She notched a pair of five-goal performances against Louisville (Feb. 9) and Notre Dame (Apr. 11).

Balanced Attack
Fifteen different Blue Devils have scored a goal and 14 players have notched at least one assist this season ... Twelve Blue Devils have recorded multiple-goal games, led by junior Kerrin Maurer, who owns nine hat tricks ... In a 25-4 season-opening victory over Elon Feb. 7, 14 different Duke players found the back of the net with Maurer tallying a career-high six markers.

Virden Quick on the Draw
Duke is 7-3 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Senior defender Taylor Virden has been scrappy on the wings, leading the team with 60 draw controls ... She ranked seventh in the ACC in draws entering last week ... Virden won a career-high six draws last season against Vanderbilt (March 2, 2013) and matched that total with six against Virginia (March 22) ... The Ellicott City, Md., native moved into second on Duke’s all-time list for career draw controls against Syracuse (March 29) and owns 182 over her four seasons.

Scoring Streaks
Junior Kerrin Maurer has tallied at least one point in a career-high 23 consecutive games dating back to last season ... The Setauket, N.Y., native has scored multiple goals in 16 of 17 games this spring and recorded multiple assists nine times ... Senior Sydney Peterson (8 games) is also in the midst of a career-long scoring streak.

Duo Climbing Single-Season Charts
In her third season, junior attacker Kerrin Maurer continues to etch her name into the program record books ... The Setauket, N.Y., native’s team-leading 80 points this spring tie her for sixth on Duke’s single-season chart .. Maurer is also eighth on the Blue Devils’ single-season list for goals (52) and 10th in assists (28) ... Senior defender Taylor Virden comes in at tied for sixth on the single season chart for draw controls with 60 this spring.

Blue Devils Moving Up Career Lists
Senior defender Taylor Virden and junior attacker Kerrin Maurer provide veteran experience at both ends of the field ... Maurer is currently third in program history in career assists (87) and ranks ninth in career points (199), while junior Taylor Trimble is 20th all-time in points   (111) after reaching the 100-point mark against Syracuse (March 29) ... Virden ranks second all-time in career draw controls with 182 ... She reached the 100-ground ball mark for her career against Virginia (March 22), becoming the 26th player in Duke history to achieve the feat.

Against Ranked Opponents
Since the 2010 season, Duke is 31-28 against ranked teams ... Duke is 3-7 against ranked foes this season following the NCAA first round victory over No. 19 Stanford.
