DURHAM, N.C. – The reigning ACC Champion Duke volleyball team begins the season ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation as the Blue Devils sit No. 21 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Head coach Jolene Nagel, the 2013 ACC and AVCA All-East Coast Region Coach of the Year, returns for her 16th season at the helm of the Blue Devil program. Duke (28-5, 18-2 ACC) returns 11 letterwinners from this past season’s squad which advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ACC-leading 18th time in program history. The Blue Devils captured the 2013 ACC Championship and the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in thrilling fashion, rallying for a 3-2 decision over then-No. 14 North Carolina in the regular season finale to avoid a three-way tie with UNC and Florida State for the conference crown.
Duke returns five starters from last year’s team, including ACC Player of the Year and third team All-American Emily Sklar as well as AVCA honorable mention All-Americans Maggie Deichmeister and Jeme Obeime.
The Blue Devils open the 2014 campaign with the Duke Invitational Aug. 29-30 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
