Duke senior outside hitter Claire Smalzer was named the Ronald McDonald House Charities Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 23, after helping the Duke volleyball team secure the 2010 ACC Championship last weekend.
Smalzer, a 6-0 native of Palos Heights, Ill., recorded her eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season in a pair of ACC Championship-clinching wins over Virginia Tech (3-1) and Virginia (3-0). The senior posted a .294 hitting percentage with averages of 3.86 kills and 4.00 digs for the week as Duke also clinched the automatic NCAA Tournament bid. Smalzer made only seven errors on team-high 68 attacks and also jumped into third place on Duke’s all-time digs list (1,565).
Smalzer and the Blue Devils (24-5, 16-3 ACC) will play their final match of the regular season this evening at Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Duke will then learn its NCAA Postseason assignment on Sunday, Nov. 28, during the NCAA Volleyball Selection show on ESPN News at 3 p.m.
