Bus Trip #1
This weekend was a fun one for Duke volleyball mostly because it combined three of our favorite things. Bus trips, lots of family, and winning. Thursday evening after a good practice, we packed up our things, loaded our sleeper bus, and greeted our awesome bus driver Allen, ready for the three-hour trip up to Virginia Tech. This was the first long road trip for our freshmen, and there was a great atmosphere as we all settled in hanging out, watching movies and baseball. Most of us had finished up a very busy week of school and were ready to unwind and relax. After waiting on our last teammate to get to the bus after class, we headed out.
Once we got to Blacksburg it was already kind of late, so we were all ready to wind down. However, I was put in a room with Ali (Ali McCurdy) and T (Christiana Gray) that connected to a room with Cookie (Chelsea Cook) and Soph (Sophia Dunworth). Anyone who knows our team knows that that is a recipe for a good time since those are probably the four goofiest girls of the group. Several different teammates stopped in to say goodnight before bed, and we all had a great time talking about our favorite scary movies before bed. Ali and I went to bed so scared that we were very happy to be sharing a bed with each other, and a room with T, our biggest, strongest, bravest teammate.
Friday proved successful for us where we battled hard to win in a gym that has historically been tough for us to play in. We worked hard and stuck together and it paid off. We said goodbye to family, hit the showers, and got ready to drive a little further up to the University of Virginia. However, although we were all ready to go, our bus wasn't. For the first time in my career here, our bus died outside of the gym. Thankfully the Miami soccer team was parked right behind us in the exact same bus and gave us a jump so we could get to our next opponent.
We stay in one of our favorite hotels at Virginia, mostly because of the delicious omelet bar we get for breakfast. After a great breakfast, we had Saturday afternoon mostly free. With Duke Football having a bye, we watched a lot of other football and rested up for another big game. Saturday night was strangely familiar to Friday night. The match went five with Duke winning games two, four, and five to come out on top.
We returned home Saturday night excited about a Fall Break that was much needed and well deserved. With Monday and Tuesday off we were all eager to scratch some things off our to do lists...including sleep. It will be a quick turnaround for our matches this weekend, and we are all beyond excited to be back home in Cameron Indoor. This weekend will be filled with family, football, big ACC matches, and for the first time this year, a little basketball as Friday night we are all excited to witness our very first Countdown to Craziness. Hope to see you all in Cameron this weekend!Nailah A. Waterfield
