N.C. State 84, Duke 76

Team Notes:

•    Duke suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 15-1 on the year. Duke was one of only two unbeaten teams in the country entering Saturday (Michigan, 16-0). Duke remains one of only seven teams in the nation with 15 or more wins.
•    Duke’s 15-1 start ranks tied for the second best start in school history with 14 other Duke squads, the last of which was the 2010-11 Duke team.
•    The loss dropped Duke’s all-time record as the No. 1 team in the country to 213-32 and ended a streak of six consecutive wins as the No. 1 squad. Duke’s last loss as the No. 1 team in the nation came on Feb. 26, 2011 against Virginia Tech on the road. Duke’s last four losses as the nation’s top team have been away from home.
•    The Blue Devils have been ranked No. 1 for 124 weeks overall including 106 weeks under Coach K, who is 189-27 (.875) all-time when coaching Duke as the No. 1 team in the nation.
•    Duke falls to 3-1 against top-25 teams this season. The Blue Devils have defeated No. 2 Louisville, No. 3 Kentucky and No. 4 Ohio State this season.
•    The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak against ACC opponents on the road. Duke went undefeated on the road in ACC regular season play in 2011-12.
•    Duke played without starting forward Ryan Kelly for the first time this season. Duke is 105-13 (.890) with Kelly in the lineup and 4-5 (.444) when he does not play.
•    Duke played its 192nd straight game as a top-10 team. The Blue Devils are 161-31 (.839) during that span.
•    For only the fourth time all season, Duke allowed more than 70 points in a game. N.C. State’s 84 points are the most by any Duke opponent this season. Duke entered the game holding opponents to an average of 60.3 points per game.
•    Duke trailed 41-39 at halftime, marking only the second time this season that the Blue Devils have trailed at the half.  Duke trailed No. 4 Ohio State, 31-23, at halftime on Nov. 28 but rallied to outscore the Buckeyes 50-37 in the second half that night.
•    Duke strung together a 13-2 run in the first half to stake a 21-15 lead. N.C. State countered later in the half with a 14-2 run that gave the Wolfpack a 33-29 lead.
•    NC State forward Richard Howell became only the fifth player to record a double-double against Duke this season.
•    Despite playing without starting forward Ryan Kelly, Duke’s starting five still combined to score 66 of the team’s 76 points or 86.8 percent of the team’s total scoring. Duke’s starters have scored at least 75.0 percent of the team’s total points in 15 of 16 games this season.
•    Seniors Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee combined to score 37 points. Those two have scored 30 or more points 10 times this season and combine to average 33.9 points per game as the ACC’s second-most productive scoring duo.

Player Notes:

Quinn Cook

•    Earned his 14th straight start and scored in double figures for the ninth time this season. Cook is averaging 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game since beginning ACC play.
•    Dished out seven assists, bringing his season total to 99. Cook has delivered five or more assists nine times this season and averages 6.2 assists per game. With an average of 11.8 points per game, Cook would become only the fifth player in school history to average at least 6.0 assists and 10.0 points per game (Dick Groat, Bobby Hurley, Jason Williams and Chris Duhon).
•    Extended his consecutive made free throw streak to nine. Cook has not missed a free throw since December 8, 2012, against Temple.
•    Tied a career high with 16 field goal attempts, matching his total from Duke’s previous game, a 68-40 win over Clemson in which Cook scored a career-high 27 points.
•    Fouled out for the first time in his Duke career.

Seth Curry
•    Matched a season high with five made three-pointers, knocking down 5-of-10 shots from beyond the arc. Curry has hit multiple treys in 11 of 15 games this season and is shooting .434 (36-of-85) from three-point range this season.
•    Scored in double figures for the third straight game against N.C. State and over 20 for the second straight contest against the Wolfpack. Curry scored 26 points in the Feb. 16, 2012 meeting against the Wolfpack, 21 of which came in the second half. Curry scored 22 second-half points against N.C. State on Saturday. For his career, Curry is averaging 17.3 points per game against N.C. State.
•    Attempted at least 10 three-point shots for the second time in his Duke career.
•    Led Duke in scoring for the seventh time this season (6-1) and 15th time in his Duke career (13-2).
•    Pulled down five rebounds, falling one shy of matching his career high.

Josh Hairston
•    Drew his first start of the season and third of his career. Hairston played a career-high 25 minutes and totaled eight points, five rebounds and one assist. Three of his rebounds came on the offensive end.
•    The eight points were an ACC high for Hairston, as were the four made field goals.

Amile Jefferson
•    Came off the bench to deliver his second double-figure scoring game of the season with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Jefferson’s five made field goals tied a career high, while his .833 field goal percentage was the best mark of his career.
•    Fouled out for the first time in his career, notching his fifth foul with 8:07 remaining.
•    Recorded four rebounds, two of which were on the offensive end. Both offensive boards led to second-chance points.

Mason Plumlee
•    Scored in double figures for the 15th time in Duke’s 16 games. Plumlee ranks second in the ACC with 17.5 points per game.
•    Shot 7-of-10 from the floor to finish with a shooting percentage of .500 or better for the 15th time in Duke’s 16 games.
•    Increased his career rebound total to 908 while becoming the 11th player in school history to reach 900 boards. Plumlee needs just 92 more rebounds to become the ninth player in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and the third with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 150 blocks.
•    Notched multiple blocks in a game for the seventh time this season and 44th time in his Duke career. Plumlee ranks fifth on Duke’s career blocks list with 173 rejections.
•    Hauled in double-digit rebounds for the ACC-leading 11th time this season and the seventh time in Duke’s past nine games.
•    Scored 10 points in the first half, giving him double-digit scoring in 16 of Duke’s 32 halves this season and at least one double-figure scoring half in 13 of Duke’s 16 games.

Tyler Thornton
•    Ended a streak of five consecutive games with a three-pointer.
