DURHAM, N.C. – Following a standout rookie campaign with the Blue Devils, Duke volleyball rising sophomore Emily Sklar joined the USA Women’s Junior A1 International Team for a 10-day training camp earlier this summer and is currently with the squad in Europe. The team is set to compete in Europe from July 9-20, capping its experience with the 9th Annual European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia.
Prior to tournament play, the team will spend time in Maribor, Slovenia, with exhibition matches against the Slovenian Youth and Junior National Teams. The stop in Slovenia is Sklar’s second since the end of the academic year as she joined the Blue Devils on a European tour to Italy, Slovenia and Austria earlier this spring.
The Annual European Global Challenge Opening Ceremony will take place Sunday, July 14 as Team USA sends a squad of 12 athletes to take on the top junior national teams from Europe. Matches are set for July 15-18 before the tournament concludes July 19.
Sklar, a 6-3 outside hitter from San Jose, Calif., garnered ACC All-Freshman Team honors and twice earned ACC Freshman of the Week accolades this past season. She finished the 2012 campaign with 319 kills, 235 digs, 35 blocks and 23 service aces. Sklar led the Blue Devils with 10 double-doubles and reached double-digit kills 18 times as a freshman.
