DURHAM, N.C. – Two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year Ali McCurdy is one of 30 women’s volleyball student-athletes selected as candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, which honors Division I volleyball players who excel in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
A three-year starter at libero, McCurdy earned her second consecutive ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2012 after she ended the season with 672 digs, breaking the school single-season record for the second time in as many seasons. McCurdy also led the ACC, averaging 5.25 digs per set her junior year en route to her third career AVCA Honorable Mention All-America, All-East Region and All-ACC accolades. The only Duke player to average over five digs per set for her career, she is on the verge of becoming just the second Blue Devil to top 2,000 career digs.
McCurdy, a Sociology major with a minor in Cultural Anthropology and certificate in Markets and Management Studies, also earned Capital One Academic All-District III honors last season and is a three-time member of both the All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team and the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Of the 30 candidates, 10 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher and 19 are American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
