Duke Holds Open Public Practice
The Blue Devils held an open public practice Saturday morning to kick off homecoming festivities on campus. Roughly 3,000 fans came out to get their first look at Coach K's squad in a two-hour practice session at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The practice closed with a highly-competitive 12-minute scrimmage. The back-and-forth tilt closed in a 23-23 tie as Quinn Cook, Alex Murphy and Jabari Parker made key plays down the stretch, and freshman guard Matt Jones knocked down a pair of clutch free throws. Cook, who buried a scrimmage-tying three at the buzzer to close out Friday's opening practice, hit a tough-angle floater while being fouled and the ensuing free throw to tie up the contest with under 10 seconds remaining. Murphy, who had a couple key buckets in the scrimmage, attacked the basket at the other end only to have Parker knock his floater into the Duke bench as time expired.

In addition to the practice being open to the public, the Blue Devil Network broadcast 90 minutes of the session on GoDuke.com. A full replay of the practice is available on GoDuke.com at the following link:

Hood & Thornton Named Co-Captains
Redshirt sophomore Rodney Hood and senior Tyler Thornton have been named team captains for the 2013-14 season, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced at a preseason press conference Friday. Hood and Thornton are both first-time team captains for the Blue Devils.

“It’s an honor, especially with the list of guys who were captains before me,” said Thornton, “This is my senior year, and we’ve got a great team that can do a lot of amazing things. It’s an honor to be a captain and be a leader of these guys.”

“It means a lot to me to be named captain, just for the coaching staff and my teammates to have that much respect for me,” said Hood, who is just the third Duke sophomore to be named captain. “I’ve just got to be me and continue to lead the younger guys and lead by example. Coach doesn’t want me to do anything I haven’t been doing. That’s one of the reasons I am captain, leading by example and helping my teammates when they’re in need. I’m not going to try to create a new identity just because I’m playing now.”

Duke No. 1 in ESPN Future Power Rankings
The Blue Devils were tabbed No. 1 overall in ESPN's College Basketball Future Power Rankings last week. A panel consisting of Paul Biancardi, Jay Bilas, Fran Fraschilla, John Gasaway, Jeff Goodman, Seth Greenberg, Andy Katz and Miles Simon rated programs on a 1-to-10 scale in five different categories: Coaching, Current Talent, Recruiting, Program Power and Stability. Duke in the Community
Duke players continue to be active in the Durham community participating with a variety of charitable organizations. Freshman Jabari Parker and sophomore Amile Jefferson spoke with a group of Hillside High School students following Saturday's open practice. Quinn Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon have contributed to The Monday Project, which will renovate the basketball court at the Duke Children's Hospital. Others have taken part in the Read With the Blue Devils initiative, a long-standing Duke athletics project in which student-athletes read to local elementary school students.

Kristen Ledlow, co-host of an Atlanta sports radio show, will join Hill on NBA Inside Stuff.

The original series ran from 1990 to 2005 and was known for its trademark off-the-court features with NBA players. The weekly magazine show was hosted by Emmy Award winner Ahmad Rashad and has included a variety of co-hosts through the years, including Julie Moran, Willow Bay, and Summer Sanders.
