Duke in the NBA: Redick's Big Month

DURHAM, N.C. - With the NBA season halfway over, several former Duke standouts are playing well for their respective clubs. On Tuesday, Kyrie Irving scored 40 points against Boston as the Cavs defeated the Celtics, 95-90. Elton Brand is starting to heat up for the Mavericks, scoring in double figures in each of his past five games, while J.J. Redick is enjoying his most successful month of the 2013 regular season, averaging 16.6 points in January.

Shane Battier
Forward - Miami Heat
Drafted: 1st Round (6th pick) by the Memphis Grizzlies (2001)

: 33 games, 5.7 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 0.7 APG, 0.5 SPG, 0.8 BPG
Battier missed three games due to a hamstring injury, but he returned to the Miami lineup Wednesday.He scored three points and grabbed seven rebounds in his return. Battier has been a key role player for a Miami team that is in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 27-12 record.

Elton Brand 
Forward - Dallas Mavericks
Drafted: 1st Round (1st pick) by the Chicago Bulls (1999)

: 38 games, 7.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.0 APG, 0.6 SPG, 1.2 BPG
Brand has scored in double figures in his last five games for the Mavericks, averaging 13 points per game in that span. Brand recorded a double-double in back-to-back games this past week as he registered 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 105-100 win over the Rockets on Jan. 16, while scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds in a 117-114 loss to the Thunder on Jan. 18. Two nights prior to the Thunder game, Brand scored a season-high 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting in a 113-98 win over Minnesota. The 13-year veteran ranks among the top-25 in the NBA in blocks per game and rebounds per 48 minutes played.

Carlos Boozer 
Forward - Chicago Bulls
Drafted: 2nd Round (35th pick) by the Cleveland Cavaliers (2002)

: 41 games, 16.1 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Boozer is averaging nearly a double-double this season for the Bulls, with 16.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. The big man scored a season-high 36 points in a game on Jan. 16 against the Raptors, with 17 points coming in the first quarter of the contest. Two nights later, Boozer scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in a 100-99 win over the Celtics. Boozer provided the game-winning assist on a pass from the left baseline to guard Marco Belinelli. The 10-year pro is second on the Bulls in scoring, while ranking third in the league in double-doubles with 23 on the season. Boozer has scored in double figures for the Bulls in 14 consecutive games, while averaging 21.1 points over his last 10 games.

Luol Deng 
Forward - Chicago Bulls
Drafted: 1st Round (7th pick) by the Phoenix Suns (2004)

: 38 games, 17.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Chicago's leading scorer this season, Deng has been sidelined the last three games with a hamstring injury he re-aggravated against the Celtics on Jan. 18. Prior to that game, Deng had scored in double figures in 16 of the last 18 games he has played, averaging 17.2 points over his last 10 games. In a game against the Raptors on Jan. 16, Deng scored the game-winning basket with three seconds left as he pulled up from 18-feet to give the Bulls a 107-105 win. A native of Wau, Sudan, Deng scored a season-high 33 points in a 108-101 Bulls win over the Knicks in Madison Square Garden on Jan. 11. Deng still leads the league in minutes played per game, averaging 39.8, while also ranking in the top-25 in scoring.

Chris Duhon 
Guard - Los Angeles Lakers
Drafted: 2nd Round (38th pick) by the Chicago Bulls (2004)

: 36 games, 3.4 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 3.3 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.0 BPG
Duhon continues to play an important role for the Lakers off the bench this season playing solid defense and minimizing turnovers. Duhon, who ranks third in the NBA in assists per turnover at 4.1, is averaging less than one turnover per game at 0.83. In a game on Jan. 13 against Cleveland, Duhon dished seven assists in the contests, while the night prior against the Thunder Duhon assisted on five baskets and tied his season-high with five rebounds.

Mike Dunleavy 
Forward - Milwaukee Bucks
Drafted: 1st Round (3rd pick) by the Golden State Warriors (2002)

: 33 games, 11.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 2.2 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Dunleavy continues to play an important role for the Bucks this season off the bench. He has scored in double figures the past five games, including a 16-point game against the Suns. In that game, Dunleavy was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, while recording three rebounds and three assists. Dunleavy posted game-high plus-12 rating in the game against the Suns. He is the third leading scorer for the Bucks this season, averaging 11.5 points per game.

Gerald Henderson
Guard - Charlotte Bobcats
Drafted: 1st Round (12th pick) by the Charlotte Bobcats (2009)
2012-13 Stats
: 28 games, 12.7 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.1 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Henderson has scored in double figures in seven of 11 contests in the month of January, with two 17-point outings against the Magic and Cavaliers. Henderson is the fourth leading scorer for the Bobcats, averaging 12.7 points per game

Grant Hill 
Forward - Los Angeles Clippers
Drafted: 1st Round (3rd pick) by the Detroit Pistons (1994)

: 6 games, 4.3 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.3 BPG
After being sidelined with a bone bruise in his right knee, Grant Hill made his LA Clippers regular season debut Jan. 12 against Orlando. He played six minutes in the contest and scored two points. Two nights later against the Grizzlies, Hill recorded his season-high eight points on 3-of-5 shooting from the floor. 

Kyrie Irving 
Guard - Cleveland Cavaliers
Drafted: 1st Round (1st pick) by the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011)

: 32 games, 23.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 5.7 APG, 1.8 SPG, 0.4 BPG
Kyrie Irving scored 40 points to help the Cavs defeat the Celtics Tuesday, 95-90. Irving was 16-of-24 for the contest and recorded five assists. Irving ranks sixth in the NBA in scoring this season and is first among second year players. Irving has scored in double figures in 30 of the 32 games that the Cavaliers have played this season.  A native of West Orange, N.J., Irving has averaged 25.8 points over his past 10 games.

Dahntay Jones 
Guard/Forward - Dallas Mavericks

: 41 games, 3.6 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.2 SPG, 0.1 BPG
Jones has played in 41 of 42 contests this season for the Mavericks, while starting 13 games. He tallied five points in wins against the Rockets and the Grizzlies. In theJan. 16 game against the Rockets, Jones scored all five of his points at the free throw line, going 5-of-6 in the game. He ranks in the top-50 in free throw percentage and free-throw attempts per 48 minutes played.

Corey Maggette
Forward - Detroit Pistons
Drafted: 1st Round (13th pick) by the Seattle SuperSonics (1999)

: 18 games, 5.3 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.1 BPG
After being acquired by the Detroit Pistons over the summer, has appeared in 18 games this season coming off the bench. He has scored in double figures in two contests, with his season-high 11 points coming in a 103-83 Pistons win over the Celtics.  He has not played since Dec. 15 against the Pacers.

Josh McRoberts
Forward - Orlando Magic

: 35 games, 4.0 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, 0.3 SPG, 0.3 BPG
McRoberts has played 35 games this season for the Magic, while starting in two games. The fifth-year pro scored eight points in a 97-86 win over the Pacers, including two field goals from beyond the arc. McRoberts has scored a season-high 12 points on two occasions, including in a 125-119 loss against Portland.

Miles Plumlee

Plumlee is playing for the Mad Ants in the D-League, averaging 12.8 points in his 11 games played. Plumlee has recorded three double-doubles for the Mad Ants in the month of January, including in his last two games. In a loss against the LA D-Fenders, Plumlee tallied 15 points, while collecting 12 boards. The night prior, the rookie scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 126-115 loss against Bakersfield.

Redick has continued his success in the month of January, perhaps his best month so far in the 2012-13 season. In a Jan. 12 win over the Clippers, Redick scored five of his team's final points, including the go-ahead three with 42 seconds in the game. In his last game against Detroit, Redick scored 26 points in a 105-90 loss and was 9-of-10 from the floor, including a 5-of-6 performance from three. He has scored in double figures in each of his last eight games and is averaging 16.6 points per game in the month of January. A native of Roanoke, Va., Redick ranks third in the NBA in free-throw percentage and ranks seventh in three-pointers made.

Austin Rivers 
Guard - New Orleans Hornets

Austin Rivers enjoyed an eight point showing against his father Doc Rivers and the Boston Celtics on Jan. 16. In the game, Rivers made three field goals and two free throws. Rivers also tallied eight points three nights later against the Warriors, as he made four field goals and dished two assists.

Kyle Singler 
Forward - Detroit Pistons
Drafted: 2nd Round (33rd pick) by the Detroit Pistons (2011)

: 42 games, 8.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.5 BPG
In just his rookie season, Singler has found a starting role for the Pistons for the majority of the year. He has started 34 of the 42 games he has played this season. In a 103-88 win over the Celtics, Singler was two rebounds shy of recording a double-double, as he had 13 points and eight boards. The rookie also assisted on five baskets, while matching his career-high with three steals in the win. Three nights earlier, Singler came within one point of matching his career-high 16 points with 15 points in a 102-87 loss to the Knicks. Singler ranks eighth in scoring by rookies in the NBA.

Nolan Smith 
Guard - Portland Trail Blazers
Drafted: 1st Round (21st pick) by the Portland Trail Blaizers (2011)

Smith has played three games for the Trail Blazers since being recalled from his D-League assignment with the Idaho Stampede. In his first game back with the big club, Smith scored three points and tallied four rebounds. Smith played just two games in the D-League with the Stampede, scoring 28 and 17 points in those contests.

Lance Thomas
Forward - New Orleans Hornets

In his second season with the Hornets, Thomas has seen playing time in 35 contests, while starting nine games. He scored four points against the Kings on two field goals made and also registered four points in an 88-79 win over Houston on Jan. 9.
