Alex Murphy Signs Letter of Intent

DURHAM, N.C. - Alex Murphy has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Duke, becoming the fifth member of the 2011 recruiting class for the Blue Devils.

Murphy, a 6-8 small forward from South Kingstown, R.I.,  will enroll at Duke a year early after deciding to forgo his senior season at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Mass. Murphy started high school at the Prout School in Rhode Island and then transferred to St. Mark's, where he repeated his freshman year and reclassified to the Class of 2012.

This past season Murphy led St. Mark's to a 27-3 overall record and 14-0 mark in league play. They advanced to championship game of the Independent School League (ISL). He was named the ISL Most Valuable Player after averaging 21.0 points per game in his junior season.

In the updated 2011 recruiting rankings, Murphy is ranked No. 40 overall in the rankings and No. 45 overall by He is also listed as the No. 10 small forward by, No. 11 by ESPN and No. 15 by Rivals. Prior to his decision he was ranked as the top small forward and No. 11 overall prospect in 2012 by Rivals.

Murphy comes from a basketball family. His older brother, Erik, will be entering his junior season as a member of the University of Florida basketball team. His father, Jay, played collegiately at Boston College and was drafted with the 71st overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft by Golden State. Murphy's mother, Paivi, played for the Finnish national team.

The Blue Devils now have five players in the incoming class as Murphy joins point guard Quinn Cook (Hyattsville, Md.), small forward Michael Gbinije (Chester, Va.), center Marshall Plumlee (Warsaw, Ind.) and shooting guard Austin Rivers (Winter Park, Fla.).
