DURHAM, N.C. - Florida State starter Mike Compton held Duke to three hits in seven shutout innings and the 12th-ranked Seminoles defeated Duke 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Compton (4-0) had five strikeouts on the day and retired the final 13 batters he faced. Gage Smith earned his first save of the season, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames out of the bullpen for the Seminoles.

Florida State (13-1, 2-0 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Catcher Stephen McGee would reach on a fielder's choice before moving to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. McGee would later score on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, the Seminoles had runners at first and third with two outs. Center fielder James Ramsey sent a hard groundball towards the right side where first baseman Andy Perez made a diving stop, hopped to his feet and tagged first to end the inning.

Second baseman Devon Travis added an RBI-double down the left field line in the fifth to push the Seminole lead to 2-0.

FSU loaded the bases in the seventh but freshman Andrew Istler got first baseman Jayce Boyd to fly out to right to end the inning.

Duke (7-10, 0-2 ACC) threatened to score with two on and one out in the eighth but Smith came on in relief of Brian Busch and got the Seminoles out of the inning.

With two outs in the top of the ninth and the bases loaded, Boyd had a bases-clearing double to right to extend the FSU lead to 5-0.

Freshman lefty Trent Swart (2-2) took the loss despite holding Florida State to just two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings of work. Swart had four strikeouts in the game and held the Seminoles hitless for the first three and two thirds innings. Swart had 1-2-3 innings in the first and second and needed only nine pitches to get out of the opening frame. Sophomore Drew Van Orden tossed two shutout frames in relief for the Blue Devils.

Designated hitter Jeff Kremer, center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms, left fielder David Perkins, Perez and pinch hitter Marcus Stroman had Duke's five hits. Stroman's single in the eighth came in his first at bat of the season.

Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m. GoDuke.com will have exclusive live video coverage of Sunday's game.
