DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke incoming freshman Rasheed Sulaimon along with 23 other players have accepted invitations to attend the 2012 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team Training camp June 5-12 at the U.S. Olympc Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. The group includes one player with college experience and three players who represented the USA in the 2012 Nike Hoop Summit. The player invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team committee.
Graduating seniors Sulaimon, Gary Harris and James Robinson all suited up for the USA at the 15th annual Nike Hoop Summit. Sulaimon had three points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals in an 84-75 loss to the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit.
The five Nike Hoop Summit players will be joined at the camp by rising sophomore Jarnell Stokes (Tennessee) as well as a group of talented players for the Class of 2012 in Ryan Arcidiacono, Robert Carter, Sam Dekker, Kris Dunn, William Goodwin, Jerami Grant, Montrezl Harrell, Joel James, Jake Layman, Devonta Pollard, Rodney Purvis, Marcus Smart, Robert Upshaw and Adam Woodbury.
Participants set to graduate in 2013 include: Jabari Bird, Nate Britt, Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, Julius Randle and Troy Williams.
Following the first three or four days of training camp from June 5-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., finalist for the team will be selected by the USA Men’s Junior National Team Committee and will continue to train at the USOTC.
The official, 12-member 2012 USA Men’s U18 National Team will be selected prior to the team’s departure for the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, which will be played June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1994.
Sulaimon has also participated in the McDonald’s All-American game and the Jordan Brand Classic since the close of his senior season at Strake Jesuit in Houston, Texas. He won the three-point shootout at the McDonald’s game and helped guide the West to a 106-102 win over the East. Sulaimon knocked down four three-point field goals and finished with 18 points in the game. He went 4-of-8 from three-point distance and made several key plays over the final four minutes of play to seal the victory for the West.
At the Jordan Brand Classic, Sulaimon had 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists in a 99-95 win for the West. He was 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, in 19 minutes of action.
The 2012 USA U18 National Team will be led by a trio of experienced and successful college coaches at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship, including Billy Donovan (University of Florida) as head coach, with Mark Few (Gonzaga University) and Shaka Smart (Virginia Commonwealth University) as assistant coaches.
"It will be important to learn to play together as a team in a short amount of time," Donovan said. "We need to demonstrate great focus and teamwork and bring a high level of energy and effort every day in order to have success both in training camp and throughout the competition."
