HOUSTON, Texas – A double dose of Baylor and Duke for NCAA Final Four berths.
Top-seeded Duke and third-seeded Baylor play in the men's NCAA South Regional final on Sunday. Then, on Monday night in Memphis, the Duke women and the Lady Bears square off for a spot in the women's Final Four.
"What a great story line," Lady Bears coach Kim Mulkey said.
It is fairly common for schools to have both of its teams advance to the round of eight in the same season. That happened three times in 2009 — it could be three more this season if Kentucky's women advance — and 14 times since 2000. But this is the first time ever that there has been the same regional final matchup in both brackets since the women's tournament began during the 1981-82 season, according to STATS LLC.
"The Duke-Baylor thing on both sides ... it's kind of interesting," Duke women's coach Joanne P. McCallie said.
Before their practice session Saturday in Houston, the Baylor men were watching the Lady Bears' 77-62 victory over top-seeded Tennessee. LaceDarius Dunn was almost late for the film session because he was so absorbed in the game.
"It is a great day for Baylor," Dunn said 'It really just brought excitement to Waco, to Baylor and adds to the whole tradition."
