DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s tennis team travelled to C.C. Spaulding Elementary School on Thursday to teach students how to play the game of tennis. The Blue Devils worked with students on skills such as properly gripping the racket, juggling a ball on the racket and hitting a forehand, before putting on a demonstration.

The students from C.C. Spaulding are members of an afterschool tennis program organized by Playworks, a national nonprofit organization that transforms schools by providing play and physical activity at recess and throughout the school day. Playworks Durham opened in 2011 and now works with 15 total schools serving approximately 7,500 students in the Durham area.

The program at C.C. Spaulding is run by two Duke Schweitzer Fellows, Kim Cocce and Melissa Hector-Greene, who are responsible for teaching students basic tennis skills, while at the same time teaching valuable lessons about leadership, responsibility and teamwork.
