Personal Best Swims Mark Day One of Cavalier Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A number of Duke swimmers clocked new personal and season bests Friday on the first day of competition at the Cavalier Invite, hosted by Virginia at the Cavaliers' Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Senior Evan Schwartz paced the Blue Devils during Friday evening's finals session in Charlottesville, winning the men's 100-yard breaststroke event with a personal-best time of 55.41. That mark surpassed his previous personal best of 56.08, which he set during the morning preliminaries. Schwartz also swam in the 200 IM preliminaries, posting a personal-best time of 1:52.19.

Fellow senior Jacob Bieze collected a personal best in the men's 200 IM, taking fourth in the event finals with a 1:55.38 clocking. Bieze also swam in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly, breaking the two-minute barrier with a season-best time of 1:56.87. Meanwhile, in the men's 500 freestyle, junior Jonathan Derlath touched at 4:40.60 for a new personal best and a third-place finish. Freshman Lexi Mendes touched at 5:22.16 in the preliminaries of the women's 500 freestyle for her third-fastest mark of the season in that event.

Freshman Ryan Prince also had an impressive day, clocking under 1:54.00 for the first time this season in both the 200 backstroke preliminaries and finals. Friday evening's session saw Prince place fifth overall with a time of 1:51.68, nearly six seconds off of his previous season best heading into the meet.

Junior Sarah Soltis competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100 freestyle, surpassing her previous personal best in the event by over two seconds with a 57.05 swim.

The Cavalier Invite concludes Saturday, Feb. 16, with preliminaries getting underway at 10 a.m. and finals slated for 5 p.m.
