No. 9 Duke Continues Road Swing with Friday Night Contest at Northwestern
Ninth-ranked Duke (9-3, 2-3 ACC) continues a three-game road swing Friday, Apr. 12 with a visit to No. 4 Northwestern at 7 p.m. CST in Evanston, Ill. … The Blue Devils are 3-2 this spring against ranked opponents and 3-2 overall in road contests following a 10-9 loss to Boston College Apr. 6 in Newton, Mass. … The Wildcats enter the matchup on a nine-game win streak and own a ledger of 11-1 after topping Virginia, 11-6, on Apr. 7.

Northwestern Series History
Saturday’s contest marks the 13th all-time meeting between Duke and Northwestern with the Wildcats holding a 10-2 advantage in the series ... The Blue Devils will be in search of the program’s first win against Northwestern in Evanston.

Last Time We Met
The two teams last met in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, with Northwestern posting a 12-7 victory in Evanston to advance to the national semifinal ... Duke twice built a two-goal lead to start the game, but the second-seeded Wildcats put together a 10-3 run to close the contest ... Junior Maddy Morrissey and sophomore Taylor Trimble tallied two goals apiece in the season-ending loss ... The Blue Devils rounded out the 2012 campaign with a record of 12-7 and the program’s eighth consecutive NCAA quarterfinal appearance ... Erin Fitzgerald leads the Wildcats’ offense with 44 points on 39 goals and five assists ... Alyssa Leonard ranks second in the nation with 83 draw controls in 12 contests for an average of 6.92 per game ... As a team, Northwestern is sixth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 7.50 goals per game ... Defender Gabriella Flibotte is tied for fifth in the country with 2.50 caused turnovers per outing ... In goal, the Wildcats’ Bridget Bianco owns a goals against average of 6.97 and a save percentage of .491, which places her among the nation’s statistical leaders.

Duke fell three spots to No. 9 in the IWLCA rankings following a narrow 10-9 loss on the road to Boston College Apr. 6 ... The Blue Devils now rank fourth in the ACC standings with a conference ledger of 2-3 and an overall record of 9-3 ... Sophomore Kerrin Maurer leads the team in points (46) and assists (21) while senior Makenzie Hommel has scored a team-high 33 goals ... Maurer is second in the league in assists per game (1.75) and fourth in points per game (3.83) ... Junior Taylor Virden leads Duke and the ACC with 24 ground balls and moved into ninth place on the Blue Devils’ all-time draw controls chart with 106 for her career ... Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea has posted an ACC-best .546 save percentage to go along with a 9.08 goals against average in eight appearances in the cage.

Last Time Out
Freshman Kelci Smesko netted three goals and senior Makenzie Hommel added two, but the sixth-ranked Blue Devils came up short in a 10-9 road loss to Boston College Apr. 6 ... The Eagles outshot Duke, 20-13, and won the draw by a 14-7 margin while limiting the Blue Devils to just one free position goal on the afternoon ... Hommel’s second score of the day pulled Duke back within one with 3:44 remaining but Boston College won the ensuing draw and was able to fend off the Blue Devil defense the rest of the way ... Junior defender Taylor Virden tallied five draw controls and registered two ground balls and a caused turnover ... Rookie goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea made nine stops in goal in the loss.

Duke Top-20 Nationally in Points Scored
In the April 8 edition of the NCAA’s Division I team statistics, the Blue Devils were tied for 17th nationally in points scored with 220 through 12 games (161g, 59a) ... Duke also ranked among the top 20 teams in the country  in scoring offense (16th, 13.42 gpg), scoring defense (19th, 8.75 gapg) and in scoring margin (15th, 4.67).

Devilish on Defense
The Blue Devils’ defense ranks third in the ACC and 19th nationally, allowing opponents just 8.75 goals per game ... Duke has limited opponents to single-digit scoring six times this season, including in a three-game span against Jacksonville (March 13), Dartmouth (March 17) and Virginia (March 23) ... The team collected the second shutout in program history and first since the 1998 season in a 23-0 victory over Presbyterian (Feb. 10) ... Sophomore Taylor Trimble has registered a point in 11 straight contests entering this weekend’s action ... Trimble and classmate Brigid Smith are in the midst of career-best scoring streaks, with Smith scoring in each of her past six outings ... Senior Makenzie Hommel has scored at least one point in seven consecutive contests. 

Virden Quick on the Draw
Through 12 games, Duke leads its opponents in draw controls by a 154-137 margin ... Junior defender Taylor Virden leads the squad with 38 draw controls this spring for an average of 3.17 per game, which ranks her sixth in the ACC ... The Ellicott City, Md., native won a career-best six draws earlier this season against Vanderbilt (3/2), and has registered three or more draws in seven games overall ... Virden totaled five draws against Boston College (Apr. 6) to give her 106 for her career, moving her into ninth on Duke’s all-time list.

Scheduling the Best
Duke’s 2013 slate currently features six teams ranked in the top 20 of the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll ... The Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season against then-No. 4 Maryland on Feb. 24 ... The Terrapins moved up to the top spot in the following week’s IWLCA poll ... Rookies Make Immediate Impact
Six Blue Devil freshmen have seen the field so far this season with Kelci Smesko and Kelsey Duryea entering the starting lineup ... Smesko and classmate Maddy Acton each collected their first collegiate goals in the season opener against Virginia Tech (Feb. 8) ... Smesko has started every contest at attack and has tallied 26 points on 16 goals and 10 assists, with the 10 helpers ranking her second on the squad ... Acton has played in every game, recording 12 points (10g, 2a) ... Duryea made her first appearance between the pipes in the second half against Maryland and has started the seven games since then ... Attack Duo Moving Up Career Lists
Senior Makenzie Hommel and sophomore Kerrin Maurer have both started the 2013 season in strong fashion ... Hommel has registered a team-high 33 goals to go with six assists for a total of 39 points, while Maurer owns 25 goals and leads the team in assists (21) and points (46) ... Hommel surpassed the 100-point mark for her career with a two-goal performance against Boston College (Apr. 6) ... Maurer needs just five more points to reach the 100-point barrier and is also approaching the 50-assist milestone with 45 in just her second season.
