DURHAM, N.C. – Duke swept the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season Tuesday following a pair of wins by the squad last week over Davidson and Ohio State. Senior attacker Makenzie Hommel was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career while freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea picked up her third Defensive Player of the Week honor.

The Blue Devils’ leading scorer on the spring, Hommel totaled nine points in two contests last week to pace the team offensively. She matched a career-high with five goals and six points overall in Saturday’s 15-9 victory over Ohio State while also notching her eighth hat trick of the season. The Setauket, N.Y., native has tallied a career-best 41 goals as a senior to push her career total to 112, ranking her 18th on Duke’s all-time list.

Duryea continues to anchor a defensive unit that has held eight opponents to single-digit scoring on the year. The rookie from Beverly, Mass. owns a ledger of 7-3 in the cage after posting 16 saves in two contests last week. Duryea also ranks among the national and conference statistical leaders, coming in at second in the country in save percentage (.522) and third in saves per game (9.55).

Ninth-ranked Duke is set to face Virginia Thursday, Apr. 25 at 1 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2013 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The tournament is being held at North Carolina’s Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. and will be broadcast on RSN.
