Big Second Half Puts Duke Past Old Dominion, 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. – Matt Slotnick scored a pair of goals and Duke scored four goals in an eight-minute span in the second half to cruise past No. 25 Old Dominion 6-1 in the first exhibition game of the 2014 campaign. The Blue Devils outscored the Monarchs 5-0 in the second half.

Duke outshot the Monarchs 21-8 for the game, including a 12-3 edge in shots on goal advantage. Joe Ohaus had a pair of saves in the victory.

Old Dominion opened the scoring in the 21st minute as Ryan Condotta finished a Geoffrey Hill pass for the 1-0 lead. The goal came on the Monarch’s first shot of the half. The Blue Devils had the first four shots in the game and connected in the 37th minute on a Brody Huitema goal.

The second half proved to be a different story for the Blue Devils as they scored five unanswered goals. Slotnick started the five-goal run on a flick from Butwin in the 58th minute. Duke continued to press forward and won a pair of penalty kicks just a minute apart. Luis Rendon scored the first and Butwin added the second.

Rookie Cody Brinkman quickly made it 5-1 two minutes later to make it 5-1, while Slotnick finished off the scoring in the 72nd minute off an assist from Butwin.

The Blue Devils return to action Aug. 19 when they host Radford at 7 p.m. The season officially opens Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Rennie Nike Classic.
