DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's basketball program was featured extensively this week as ESPN.com released its annual preseason rankings, All-America teams and top five position rankings.
The Blue Devils' had two on ESPN.com preseason All-America teams as both junior Chelsea Gray and sophomore Elizabeth Williams were named to the second team along with Alyssa Thomas (Maryland), Bria Hartley (Connecticut) and Jordan Hooper (Nebraska). The first team included Brittney Griner (Baylor), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Elena Delle Donne (Delaware) and Odyssey Sims (Baylor).
In the ESPN.com preseason top 10, the Blue Devils were listed No. 3 behind only Baylor (No. 1) and Connecticut (No. 2). Rounding out the top 10 includes Maryland, Stanford, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Louisville, Penn State and Delaware.
ESPN.com also ranked the top five players at each position and Gray was one of the top five guards, while Williams was one of the top five centers.
Gray is coming off a sophomore season where she averaged 12.5 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.8 steals. She ranked 12th nationally in assists and 29th in steals. The 5-11 playmaker elevated her game even more in the NCAA Tournament averaging 16.0 points, 6.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals as she was named to the Fresno Regional All-Tournament team.
A product of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams is coming off a rookie campaign where she was named the consensus National Freshman of the Year in 2011-12. The 6-3 center averaged 14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals a year ago, while earning ESPN.com, USBWA and Full Court Freshman of the Year accolades.
Duke will open the 2012-13 season on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m., as the Blue Devils will host Presbyterian at 7:00 p.m.
