DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University signee Rebecca Greenwell has been named one of five members of the Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year Early Season Watch List, released by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
The players were selected by basketball journalists from around the country, who form the Naismith Awards national voting academy. The selections were based on player performances last season and expectations for the 2012-13 campaign. One female will ultimately be selected as winner, and she will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Naismith Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in Atlanta.
Other student-athletes on the watch list include Kaela Davis (Georgia Tech), Diamond DeShields (North Carolina), Linnae Harper (Kentucky), Taya Reimer (Notre Dame) and Mercedes Russell (Tennessee).
Greenwell, who is a product of Owensboro, Ky., is the ranked No. 6 in the latest ESPN.com rankings and is coming off missing her junior season with a knee injury. In the first three games of the 2012-13 campaign, Greenwell has averaged 30.0 points a game scoring 37, 29 and 24 points. As a sophomore, Greenwell averaged 32.6 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 3.9 steals and 1.4 blocks.
Duke has signed the No. 2 ranked recruiting class in the nation for the 2013-14 season that includes Greenwell, Kianna Holland, Oderah Chidom and Kendall Cooper.
