DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s basketball signee Rebecca Greenwell has been selected one of three finalists for the 2013 Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year award, which was announced on Thursday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.

Other finalists along with Greenwell are Diamond DeShields (North Carolina) and Mercedes Russell (Tennessee).  The candidates were selected by basketball journalists from around the country, who form the Naismith Trophy national high school voting academy. The selections were based on player performances during the 2012-13 basketball season.

Out of Owensboro Catholic H.S., Greenwell owns averages of 24.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals.  Greenwell collected a national record of 17 three-pointers on Jan. 14 against Trinity as she finished with a season-high 51 points.  The 6-1 guard is coming off notching 17 points and 15 rebounds in the Class A State Championship victory over Newport Central Catholic H.S., on Jan. 27.

“With so much talent to consider, the standard for this award reaches new heights every year,” said Eric Oberman, Executive Director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. “This year’s finalists are a special group, and the judges now face the challenge of determining which of these three will be crowned 2013 Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year.”

Greenwell has drained 51 three-pointers in 11 games this season, while notching a total of three double-doubles.

The winner of the Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year award will be recognized at the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s Naismith Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Atlanta.
