GREENSBORO, N.C.— For the third straight year, Duke University junior Elizabeth Williams has been named ACC Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, following a vote by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives.

Williams is the first player in ACC history to receive the honor three times and a Duke student-athlete has now received ACC Defensive Player of the Year in six out of 10 years.

The 6-3 center has helped Duke rank second among conference teams in field goal percentage defense (.374) and sixth among the ACC’s 15 teams in scoring defense (64.2 percent).  She leads the league in blocks per game (2.9) and ranks 14th nationally.

Williams, a three-time All-ACC selection, has also averaged 13.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals in the regular season.  She ranks 47th nationally in field goal percentage (52.7).

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Williams ranks in numerous other ACC categories including 19th in scoring and 12th in rebounding, 11th in field goal percentage.  In league games only, Williams ranks 18th in scoring (14.6), seventh in rebounding (8.1), 14th in field goal percentage (49.5) and first in blocked shots (3.1).  Williams has totaled 87 blocked shots on the season, which is more than Duke’s opponents have swatted (77).

Other Duke standouts that have been selected ACC Defensive Player of the Year include Lindsey Harding (2006 & 2007) and Chante Black (2009).

In the upcoming ACC Tournament, the Blue Devils will face either seventh-seeded Georgia Tech, 10th-seeded Virginia (13-16) or 15th-seeded Boston College (12-18).  The Cavaliers and Eagles will play on 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 5 and the winner will advance to face the Yellow Jackets (19-10) on Thursday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m.
