DURHAM, N.C. – At the end of week five, former Blue Devils continue to create an impact in the WNBA and overseas. Alana Beard of the Sparks remains one of the top scorers of the group, averaging 12.2 points. Kathleen Scheer and Jess Foley make their mark in Australia this summer averaging 20.5 and 12.4 points, respectively.
Mistie Bass – Duke ’06 Phoenix Mercury, 6-3, Forward 2014 Stats: 11 games, 4.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 0.5 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG Bass, appearing in all 11 games of the 2014 campaign thus far, netted a season-high 15 points in a June 20 contest against the Connecticut Sun. In that same game, Bass also grabbed five rebounds in 16 minutes of action. The Mercury owns an 8-3 overall record, ranking first in the Western Conference. Phoenix looks to hold on to their top-spot on Friday, June 20 against the Tulsa Shock. Tip-off is set for 10 p.m.
Alana Beard – Duke ‘04 LA Sparks, 6-1, Guard/Forward 2014 Stats: 10 games, 12.2 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 2.0 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.6 BPG Beard continues to be a key player for the Sparks starting all nine games, averaging 27.1 minutes per contest. She netted a season-high 20 points on June 19 against the Tulsa Shock, and also contributed five assists and four rebounds to the Sparks win. Other highlights include scoring 18 points on June 17 against Minnesota and 14 points June 6 against Chicago. The former Blue Devil owns a .500 field-goal percentage ranking her No. 12 in the WNBA. Her 12.2 points per game rank her No. 19 in the league. The Sparks return to action Sunday, June 22 when they take on the San Antonio Stars. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
Karima Christmas – Duke ‘06 Indiana Fever, 6-0, Guard/Forward 2014 Stats: 10 games, 4.0 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 0.9 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.1 BPG Christmas continues to contribute to the fourth-ranked Fever (5-5) averaging 20.8 minutes. Highlights from the past two weeks include grabbing five rebounds in 22 minutes of action against the Chicago Sky (June 6). Indiana went on to defeat the Sky 64-61. She currently ranks 18th in the league in free-throws (0.8) and 17th in steals to turnovers (0.9). The Fever will face Chicago Friday, June 20 at 8:30 p.m.
Monique Currie – Duke ‘06 Washington Mystics, 6-0, Forward 2014 Stats: 11 games, 6.8 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 0.9 APG, 0.6 SPG, 0.2 BPG Currie is only improving as the weeks pass, averaging 19 minutes and 6.8 points per contest. She contributed 12 points and five rebounds to the Mystics’ win over the Sun. Currie grabbed a season-high seven rebounds in 22 minutes of play against Chicago, while also contributing six points. She owns an 82.8 free-throw percentage, 14th best in the WNBA. Washington currently stands fifth in the Eastern Conference (5-7). The Mystics will take on the Lynx on Friday, June 20. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
Lindsey Harding – Duke ‘07 LA Sparks, 5-8, Guard 2014 Stats: 11 games, 7.5 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0 BPG Harding has proven to be a key component for the Sparks, averaging 30.3 minutes thus far in the 2014 campaign. She recorded 28 minutes in a June 19 contest against the Tulsa Shock where she scored a season-high 14 points and added two rebounds and assists, respectively. Harding tied her season-high nine assists on June 14 against San Antonio, also netting 12 points and three steals. Her 44 total assists rank her at No. 14 in the WNBA. Los Angles owns a 4-7 overall record, standing fifth in the Western Conference.
Tricia Liston – Duke ‘14 Minnesota Lynx, 6-0, Forward 2014 Stats: 7 games, 3.1 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 0.4 APG, 0 SPG, 0 BPG Liston has seen an increase in minutes during the month of June, averaging 9.1. She scored a season-high nine points on June 17 against the LA Sparks during 14 minutes of action going 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Liston continues to seek more playing time for the Lynx as they face the Mystics on Friday, June 20. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
Jasmine Thomas – Duke ‘11 Atlanta Dream, 5-9, Guard 2014 Stats: 10 games, 8.9 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.4 SPG, 0.3 BPG Thomas remains a starter for the Dream, averaging 23.8 minutes and 8.9 points. During a June 13 contest against Minnesota, she netted 13 points and three assists. Chicago currently holds the number-one spot in the Eastern Conference (8-3). The Dream looks to face sixth-ranked N.Y. Liberty on Friday, June 20. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Krystal Thomas – Duke ‘11 Indiana Fever, 6-5, Center 2014 Stats: 7 games, 2.6 PPG, 1.7 RPG, 0.1 APG, 0 SPG, 0.3 BPG Thomas has appeared in all seven games for the Fever, averaging 5.6 minutes. She netted a season-high eight points, going 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-4 from the line, in their most recent game against Connecticut. Thomas currently owns an 85.7 field-goal percentage and 50.0 free-throw percentage.
Duke Overseas: Kathleen Scheer – Duke ‘12 Hobart Chargers – Australia 2014 Stats: 13 games, 20.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 2.1 APG Scheer is having another impressive season with the Lady Chargers. Thus far in the 2014 campaign, she has already had five double-doubles over 13 games. Her most notable performance was during a May 17 contest against the Canberra Capitals in which she posted 32 points and 14 rebounds. Scheer went 10-of-17 from the field and 10-of-12 from the line. Prior to that game, she notched another double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Scheer leads the SEABL in total blocks (25) and also ranks top-five in four other season stats categories.
Jess Foley – Duke ‘06 Norwood Flames – Australia 2014 Stats: 8 games, 12.4 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.6 APG Foley has appeared in eight games for the Flames in the 2014 season. She scored a season-high 21 points in an April 26 contest against South Adelaide during 36 minutes of action, Foley also grabbed six steals and a season-high eight rebounds. She owns a 91.3 free-throw percentage going 21-of-23 from the line and her 12.4 points per game average ranks her third best on the team. Norwood holds a 10-1 overall record, ranking them first in the Central Australian Basketball League (ABL).
