Box Score

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—Duke University junior attackman Jordan Wolf recorded five goals and nine different players scored as the sixth-ranked Blue Devils rolled to a 16-7 victory over Rutgers Saturday evening at Yurcak Field. The win was a nation’s-best ninth straight for Duke.

With five tallies, Wolf became the 15th Blue Devil to amass 100 career goals. He currently has 103 and is 10 shy of climbing into the top 10. Freshman Deemer Class and senior Greg DeLuca both threw in a career-high two goals, while Myles Jones matched his career-high two scores.

Overall, 10 of Duke’s (11-4) 16 goals were assisted in the game as rookie Case Matheis led the charge in that category with a career-best four helpers.

“We had a whole week to prepare and work on some details of playing team defense,” said head coach John Danowski. “I thought we were extremely unselfish offensively. Once again we played an opponent who was jumping between man and zone and I thought our guys did a great job as a group of recognizing the defensive plan and then trying to attack it.”

After trading goals early in the first quarter, Duke used a pair of Class tallies to spark a 4-0 run and give the Blue Devils a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Dionne sparked the run with his 28th goal of the season and Class added two of the next three as the Blue Devils rattled off four goals in 3:52.

Rutgers (2-12) ended its 10:49 scoring drought early in the second quarter, but the Blue Devils defense stifled the Scarlet Knights, holding them to just one more goal, while adding four of their own for a 9-3 advantage at the half.

“I think we got some terrific contributions tonight from our freshmen,” Danowski said. “Deemer Class with two goals, Myles [Jones] with two goals and Case [Matheis] with four assists. John Shaffer took a bunch of shots but didn’t score so we’re really happy with the play of our freshmen.”

Scoring came from man of Duke’s usual suspects in the first half, but it was Class and defensive midfielder DeLuca registering their first career multiple-goal games that paced the Blue Devils’ offense. Defensively, Duke forced 10 turnovers and held Rutgers to just eight shots on goal in the first half.

Duke’s offense was firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, netting five unanswered, for a 14-3 lead late in the frame. Four different Blue Devils scored in the run with Jones registering two. Wolf added two more in the fourth quarter to stretch Duke’s lead to 16-4 before Rutgers closed the game with three for a 16-7 final score.

Anthony Terranova led the Scarlet Knights with two goals and an assist, while Benjamin Schwing added one goal and one assist.

Junior Brendan Fowler was outstanding again at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-22 faceoffs against Joseph Nardella, who came into the game ranked third nationally in faceoff percentage. Fowler also picked up eight ground balls to tie CJ Costabile’s Duke single-season record of 144. Duke caused a season-high 13 ground balls in the game with Chris Hipps and Jimmy O’Neill both registering two apiece.

In goal, Kyle Turri made six saves in 47 minutes of action, while Ben Krebs and Luke Aaron both had a save in six minutes apiece. Kris Alleyne had 20 saves for Rutgers in the loss.

“At the end of April I think what you’re always looking for regardless of who you are playing next is ‘Are you playing the right way? Are you learning the lessons from the games before and carrying it forward?’ And I thought this week that we did do that.”

Duke continues its schedule with the ACC Tournament. The No. 3 seed Blue Devils will take on No. 2 seed North Carolina April 26 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
