DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior Carrem Gay has signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun of the WNBA. Gay along with Kristi Cirone of Illinois State and Ashley Hayes of Murray State will get a chance to compete for a spot in the 2009 WNBA.
Gay, who is from New York, N.Y., averaged 6.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals for the Blue Devils in 2008-09. On the year, Gay started 28-of-33 contests for nationally ranked Duke, while guiding the Blue Devils to the ACC Championship game, the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a total of 27 victories.
She played her best basketball at the end of the season as she was named to the All-ACC Tournament first team, after registering 19 points and 10 rebounds in the ACC Championship game against Maryland. For the ACC Tournament, Gay averaged 12.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals in three contests. She notched double-digit scoring 10 contests on the year, including five out of her last nine games. Gay also led Duke with 13 charges taken on the season.
Over her career at Duke, Gay led the Blue Devils to 109 victories and played in 128 career contests in a Blue Devil uniform. Her 80 blocked shots in four years ranks ninth on the Duke record books, while her 31 charges taken is tied for fourth.
