FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Duke senior Tyler Clarke sits in 15th place after day one of competition in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Arkansas’ McDonnell Field, with a total of 3,860 points after five events.
He will resume action and complete the five remaining events tomorrow beginning at 2:30 p.m.
To start off the decathlon, Clarke took third in his heat and 14th overall in the 100m with a lifetime-best time of 11.06, which was the fastest Duke time in the event this outdoor season. Second, Clarke took 20th in the long jump with his second-best lifetime performance in a decathlon long jump with a leap of 21-10. He was 14th in the shot put with a throw of 42-11.75, followed by a seventh-place tie in the high jump with a clearance of 6-6.25. He later closed out the day with a 13th-place showing in the 400m with a time of 50.01, besting time in the event at the ACC Championships earlier this season.
Clarke, who typically finishes with a strong second day, still has a chance at garnering All-America honors – which go to the top eight American athletes at the conclusion of the event. He also still maintains a shot at breaking his decathlon PR – and the Duke record – of 7,326 from ACCs.
Senior Jade Ellis concluded his career on Wednesday with a 15th place performance in the semifinals of the long jump, as he leapt to his second-best all-time performance in the event of 25-3.5 on his final attempt. Ellis’ mark was second only to his performance at the ACC Championships, where he reached 25-6. The top 12 competitors advanced to the long jump finals.
The other Blue Devil scheduled to compete during the first day in Arkansas was senior Patricia Loughlin, but her outing in the steeplechase was delayed due to thunder in the area. Check back on GoDuke.com for updates.
Competition at the NCAA Championships resumes tomorrow, where Duke will be represented by Clarke’s final five events, as well as senior Molly Lehman who will go in the 1500m semifinals beginning at 8:55 p.m. EST on Thursday.
