The two-way infielder struck out a career-high 10 batters and fired nearly 70 percent of his pitches for strikes. Lumpa, a freshman, took over for O’Grady in the eighth and threw two shutout innings with three strikeouts to secure the win.

The game began as a pitching duel between O’Grady and Richmond starter Andrew Brockett (0-1), who scattered three runs – two earned – over six complete innings. Following Brockett’s departure in the seventh, Duke scored four runs off the Spiders’ bullpen.
After two scoreless innings from both pitchers to start the game, Duke finally broke through with a run in the bottom half of the third inning when Marconcini singled to drive in Pedevillano, who reached base on a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
O’Grady held onto the lead by limiting Richmond to just one hit from the third through the fifth inning and was awarded two more runs by his offense when Pedevillano and sophomore leadoff man Marcus Stroman both crossed the plate on wild pitches after reaching and stealing a base apiece.
The Blue Devils added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh after a Piwnica-Worms double that scored Angelo LaBruna and Stroman who both reached via walk. Piwnica-Worms would then score from all the way from second on an infield single from Jeff Kremer, who legged out his slow roller to third base.
Pedevillano, the 5-6, 160-pound junior outfielder, went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles, a walk and a strikeout. He also swiped a base and crossed the plate a career-high matching three times. Piwnica-Worms, who made his 118th consecutive start, finished the day 2-for-5 with a double and a single and his two RBI.
During the three game series, Duke hit for a .385 average with a .431 on-base percentage while combining for 21 runs. The Blue Devils were aggressive on the basepaths against the Spiders, stealing nine bases on 13 attempts.
