DURHAM, N.C. - After five weeks of work in the weight room and individual sessions, the Duke baseball team will take the field for its first fall practice at Jack Coombs Field Sunday.

The team has utilized its first weeks back on campus to focus on strength and conditioning as well as to solidify the team dynamic under first year head coach Chris Pollard. The Blue Devils have worked closely with strength and conditioning coach Dan Perlmutter while also implementing a throwing program aimed at improving arm strength.

"We are really excited to transition into regular team practice," said Pollard. "We have had a productive five weeks of lifting, conditioning and individuals and this time has allowed us to build arm strength as well as get guys on the same page with our terminology, communication points and routines. Coach Perlmutter has done a great job of getting these guys stronger and more explosive through his program in the weight room. We will get a good sense of where we are from a baseball standpoint after this first week."

Duke is set for an intrasquad scrimmages Sunday to open the fall campaign, followed by the Blue Devils' annual scout day Wednesday, October 3. The team will also compete in its Blue/White World Series near the end of October.

This year's installment of the Blue Devil baseball program returns 27 letterwinners from a season ago, while adding seven newcomers into the mix. Duke opens the 2013 campaign with a three-game series at Florida starting Friday, February 15.
