DURHAM, N.C. - Duke lefty Trent Swart struck out a season-high eight batters in just his second career start, leading a trio of freshman pitchers in a 10-1 win over Canisius in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field.

Swart (1-1) held the Golden Griffins to just one run on five hits in a season-high six innings of work. Andrew Istler came on in relief of Swart and pitched two scoreless frames without allowing a hit. Sarkis Ohanian then came in in the ninth and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam to end the game.

Ohanian struck out the first batter he faced before walking the next three hitters. With the bases loaded and only one out on the board, Ohanian struck out center fielder Mike Krische on three pitches. Ohanian then got pinch hitter Jesse Puscheck to fly out to short to end the game.

Duke took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Designated hitter Jeff Kremer then delivered an RBI-triple to the wall in right center to drive in the game's first run. Third baseman Jordan Betts followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Kremer.

In the bottom of the fourth, shortstop Matt Berezo lined the first pitch he saw into right center and hustled his way into a one-out double. Berezo's hustle paid off as right fielder Grant McCabe followed with an RBI-single up the middle, giving the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead.

A three-run fifth inning pushed Duke's lead to 6-0. With the bases loaded and one out, left fielder Anthony D'Alessandro drove in Betts on a fielder's choice. Catcher Mike Rosenfeld also scored on the play on a Canisius error. Berezo then capped the inning with an RBI-triple down right field line.

Canisius got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by designated hitter Shane Zimmer.

The Duke defense would step up big late in the game, ending the sixth, seventh and eighth innings with double plays. Swart started a 1-4-3 double play to end the sixth. Second baseman Angelo LaBruna started a 4-6-3 double play to end the seventh and Berezo was at the beginning of an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to finish off the eighth.

The Blue Devils added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final margin. With Berezo on second and Piwnica-Worms on first, the Duke teammates pulled off a double steal. Berezo would score and Piwnica-Worms would move to third when catcher Brooklyn Foster's attempt to throw out Piwnica-Worms sailed into center field. Kremer followed with an RBI-single to right. LaBruna would later draw a bases-loaded walk and D'Alessandro added an RBI-single through the left side to cap the scoring.

Berezo paced the Blue Devils at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Kremer went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored, while D'Alessandro drove in a pair of runs. McCabe added two hits and an RBI, Betts had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, and Piwnica-Worms and Rosenfeld both scored twice. First baseman Andy Perez also added a double for the Blue Devils.

Duke's offensive output was aided by five stolen bases in the game.

Canisius starter Garrett Cortright (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Canisius pitchers combined to walk nine Blue Devils in the game.
