DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior right-hander Marcus Stroman was drafted with the 22nd overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Monday. Stroman becomes Duke’s first-ever first round pick in school history.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Stroman said of being drafted. “To be selected in the first round is an honor. It’s unbelievable to be able to experience this with my family and friends here. It was unbelievable to hear my name called. I’m definitely excited right now and can’t wait to see how everything plays out with the Blue Jays.”

“It means a lot to me,” Stroman said of being Duke’s first-ever first round pick. “I picked Duke because it’s a great school academically and athletically. The baseball program is not necessarily one that’s known nationwide but hopefully this can put them on the map and hopefully get them to be one of the better teams in the ACC. It shows that guys who go to Duke can play baseball as well. It means a lot coming from a great institution like Duke.”

Stroman, who was named to the 2012 Louisville Slugger All-America Team and to the All-ACC First Team, is the 14th Blue Devil to be drafted in the last six years. He was the first player taken from an ACC school in this year’s draft.

Stroman, a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, led all NCAA pitchers in strikeouts with 136 and finished second in strikeouts per nine innings (12.49). Stroman went 6-5 with a 2.39 ERA in 14 starts this season.

A native of Medford, N.Y., Stroman ranked first in the ACC in innings pitched (98.0), fifth in ERA (2.39) and 10th in opponent batting average (.231). In ACC games only, Stroman finished first in innings pitched (76.0), first in strikeouts (99), first in strikeouts per nine innings (11.72) and 10th in ERA (2.49).

Stroman’s 136 strikeouts in 2012 are the fifth-most in a single season in Duke history. His 136 Ks compared to just 26 walks gave him a 5.23 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year. In his 10 ACC starts, Stroman had 99 strikeouts against 18 walks.

Stroman’s 290 career strikeouts put him at fourth on Duke’s all-time strikeouts list.

Stroman’s 2.39 ERA is the sixth-lowest in a single season in the aluminum bat era (since 1974) in Duke history. His 3.27 career ERA is the second-lowest in school history in the aluminum bat era and the sixth-lowest all-time.
