DURHAM, N.C. – Baseball America tabbed Duke senior Drew Van Orden as one of the top prospects out of the California Collegiate League in its annual summer league prospect list. Following his junior season with the Blue Devils, Van Orden spent the summer with the Santa Barbara Foresters.
Van Orden posted dominant numbers this past summer, going 5-2 in nine starts with the Foresters. He led the team in both ERA (1.29) and strikeouts (65) while walking just nine batters. Van Orden limited opposing batters to a .188 batting average and ranked first in the league in strikeouts, tied for second in wins and fourth in ERA. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., also made an appearance in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game July 17.
Van Orden appeared in 16 games this past spring with the Blue Devils, going 3-5 with a 5.94 ERA and 56 strikeouts.
BA ranked the top 30 prospects from the Cape Cod League, the top 20 prospects for Team USA, the top 25 in the Northwoods League and the top 10 prospects in 18 summer college leagues.
Duke (26-29, 9-21 ACC) returns 24-of-29 letterwinners for 2014 and added 10 newcomers to the 2014 rosters. The Blue Devils open the fall practice season Friday, Sept. 20.
