DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the addition of catcher Peter Zyla to the 2015 roster. A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Zyla is set to join the Blue Devils this fall.
“I first saw Pete Zyla at the Perfect Game Academic Showcase in Fort Myers, Fla., last June,” said Pollard. “I was really impressed with his left-handed swing. He played four positions that weekend: catcher, shortstop, second base and pitcher. In addition, he ran a 6.85/60 and a 4.3 to first base on two ground ball. He adds a tremendous amount of versatility to our 2014 class. We are excited to welcome Pete to Durham.”
A 2014 Southeast All-Region selection by Perfect Game, Zyla has the potential to really hit at the collegiate level, boasting quick hands and a solid line drive swing at the plate. Zyla was also tabbed a 2013 Underclass High Honorable Mention honoree in addition to being one of Perfect Game’s top 500 prospects nationally and top 50 in the state of Georgia.
Zyla is a product of St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta. As a junior, he helped the Golden Lions to a 20-11 overall record as well as the semifinals of the state tournament.
Zyla is one of 14 incoming recruits set to arrive in Durham this fall. GoDuke.com will release each of the Blue Devils’ 2014 signing class members, so check back for more information on all the future Duke players.
