DURHAM, N.C. – A versatile player who saw time in both the infield and outfield, senior David Perkins played in 131 games, starting 77, over the course of his Duke career. A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Team selection, his solo home run off NC State’s Carlos Rodon helped catapult Duke to a 2-0 victory over the Wolfpack April 11. Perkins graduated this spring with a degree in political science as well as a certificate in markets and management studies.
GoDuke.com caught up with the senior from Jacksonville, Fla.
GoDuke.com: What are your three favorite things about being a Duke student-athlete?
Perkins: I think the best thing about being a student-athlete is being part of a team. You get to go out on the field and go against other teams and compete … try to win an elite championship. I think that goes hand-in-hand with the second thing, which is wearing Duke across your chest and getting to represent Duke not only on the field but off the field when you meet people. You get to tell people you’re a student-athlete at Duke. That definitely has its advantages. People are always very impressed when you tell them you’re a Duke student-athlete. The third thing is that you get to carry that with you for the rest of your life. It’s not only the way you carry yourself as a student-athlete while you’re in college and on-campus but you carry that with you the rest of your life. It definitely translates in to how you carry yourself as a person.
GoDuke.com: What’s your favorite on-field memory?
DP: UNC sweep. That’s number one for me, not even close.
GoDuke.com: What’s your favorite off-field memory?
DP: I’ll go on the field I guess. Coach Pollard’s voice cracks. He’ll throw one in every now and then unintentionally but we’ll get a good laugh out of it. He’ll acknowledge that he did have a voice crack, I guess that’s a good time.
GoDuke.com: Can you describe Coach Pollard in three words?
DP: I’ll go with three phrases. No. 1 – academically slammed. No. 2 – process. No. 3 – lose focus. Every day we hear the same three phrases.
GoDuke.com: What are your three pet peeves?
DP: My three pet peeves are when people drive with their turn signals on for more than a half mile. Drives me up the wall. I start honking my horn and they don’t listen to me; it really drives me nuts. My second one is when girls call me dude. I can’t handle it; it drives me insane. I just want to tell them to never call me dude. Third pet peeve is when you hold the door for people and they don’t say thank you. So I just want to broadcast that publicly and make this world a better place.
GoDuke.com: Name three people that you would like to have dinner with.
DP: Ted Williams – greatest hitter I think. It’d be awesome to get his thoughts on hitting and what it was like to play ball back in the day. Number two, Marilyn Monroe. I don’t know who would not pick Marilyn Monroe to go to dinner with. Third person, Andy Perez in 20 years. I’d like to go to dinner with that guy. I want to see how he turns out.
