He also garnered ACC Pitcher of the Week accolades after pitching eight shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in Duke’s 2-0 victory over NC State. An ACC Academic Honor Roll selection, he received a degree in psychology with a minor in history. caught up with the Manhattan Beach, Calif., native. What are your three favorite things about being a Duke student-athlete?
Van Orden: The best thing is having great teammates around me all the time. Second best thing would be just having a busy lifestyle. I really like that. Being able to go to class and my sport and always having stuff to do; I never get bored. My third favorite thing is probably road trips. I really like going out with the team on the road and trying to win some ball games. What is your favorite on-field memory?
DV: My favorite overall on-field memory was getting the win against UNC and sweeping them as a team this year after going 0-9 against them all three years. That was really special. What is your favorite off-field memory?
DV: Anytime I just get to hang out with my teammates … had a really good round of mini golf last week with some of the guys. That was a good memory. Just anytime I’m with all my teammates is the best. What are three things you would do on an off day?
DV: Sleep would be number one. Probably watch a movie on Netflix from my bed and just eat a lot of food. Just go out three times and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Can you describe Coach Pollard in three words?
DV: Process, process, process. That’s about all he’s got right now. He repeats it all the time. Where are three places you would like to travel?
DV: Number one would probably be Australia, Great Barrier Reef. Number two would be New Zealand because of Lord of the Rings. I’d want to check out that area and pretend I’m Gandalf for a week. The third, I’d like to go to South/Southeast Asia for a while and travel around there. I’ve heard it’s pretty sweet.
