DURHAM, N.C. – Perfect Game named three Duke baseball players – junior Andrew Istler, redshirt junior Chris Marconcini and junior Sarkis Ohanian - to its annual Cape Cod League Top Prospect List.
A right-hander from Wellington, Fla., Istler appeared in 13 games with two starts as a member of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Istler posted a 2-1 record with a 2.34 ERA, the second-lowest among all Harbor Hawk pitchers with 20 or more innings. He struck out 13 batters over 23 innings of work during the summer.
Istler served as Duke’s closer during the 2013 campaign and finished with eight saves to his credit, the most by a Blue Devil pitcher since Alex Hassan also had eight saves in 2009. Istler was one of just six Duke pitchers to record eight or more saves in a single season since the stat was first recorded in 1969. Overall, he appeared in 28 games with a 4.10 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 37.1 innings pitched.
Marconcini had a standout summer with the Orleans Firebirds, batting .289 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBI. The Brentwood, Tenn., native ranked second on the team in home runs and third in both batting average and RBI. Marconcini helped Orleans to the CCBL championship series, hitting .333 in the postseason. He also represented the East at the annual Home Run Hitting Contest, holding his own with four homers.
After missing the 2012 season due to injury, Marconcini returned to the Duke lineup in 2013, starting 54 games with the Blue Devils. He belted a team-high eight home runs and also led the team in slugging percentage (.537) and total bases (102). Marconcini also provided solid defense at first base, recording a .994 fielding percentage over the course of the season.
A 2013 CCBL All Star Game selection, Ohanian also pitched for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, appearing in 10 games out of the bullpen. A native of Boynton Beach, Fla., Ohanian did not allow a run over 14.1 innings of work, striking out 13 batters and picking up three saves.
Ohanian made 22 appearances on the mound for Duke as a sophomore in 2013. Over 29.2 innings of work, he posted a 3.94 ERA and struck out 30 batters.
Duke (26-29, 9-21 ACC) returns 24-of-29 letterwinners and added 10 newcomers to the 2014 roster. The Blue Devils open fall practice season Friday, Sept. 20.
