DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior Will Piwnica-Worms and sophomore Chase Bebout were named to the Capitol One Academic All-District III Second Team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Piwnica-Worms, a 6-2, 200-pound center fielder, earned his second straight Academic All-District III citation while Bebout, a 6-6, 200-pound right-hander, appeared on the squad for the first time in his career. Duke has now placed at least two players on the Academic All-District III Team for five consecutive years under sixth-year head coach Sean McNally.
Piwnica-Worms has started 44 of Duke’s 47 games in center field and owns a 3.645 grade point average as an Evolutionary Anthropology major. A two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll, Piwnica-Worms is Duke’s active leader in hits, runs scored, RBI, stolen bases, doubles, triples, home runs and walks.
Bebout has made eight appearances on the mound, including five starts, and holds a 3.333 GPA. He owns a 3.86 ERA, a 2-3 record and has struck out 43 batters – compared to just 11 walks – in 35 innings. Opponents are hitting just .231 against the right-hander from Lake Worth, Fla., and he has not thrown a wild pitch all season.
Six ACC players earned Academic All-District III honors, and Duke was the only conference school with multiple selections. All Academic All-District selections are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
