DURHAM, N.C. – Two Duke baseball players will represent the Blue Devil program in the renowned Cape Cod League this summer while 14 others will take part in various summer leagues across the country.
Junior center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms and sophomore pitcher and infielder Marcus Stroman will both return to the Orleans Firebirds on the Cape this summer. Stroman was the top closer in the CCBL a year ago, and Piwnica-Worms played in 34 games with the Firebirds that year.
A 5-9, 185-pound right-hander, Stroman was a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities last summer and did not allow a single run over his 25 innings. He struck out 32 batters, walked three and gave up just 10 hits last summer and built upon that success during his sophomore season at Duke where he finished with a 2.80 ERA and ranked third in the country with 12.60 strikeouts per nine innings.
Piwnica-Worms was a regular for the Firebirds in 2010 and was on the field for over 260 innings in his first year in the league. He was 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts, drew 15 walks and had the second highest walk-to-strikeout ratio on the team. He was the top defensive outfielder in the ACC as a junior, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage while leading the league in putouts, and was also one of the conference’s best base stealers with 21 steals in 23 attempts.
Duke will also have four representatives in the Coastal Plain League, three in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League and one each in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, New York Collegiate Baseball League, Prospect League, Valley Baseball League, Colorado Collegiate Baseball League, Maryland Collegiate Baseball League, Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League and Harry Startzell Collegiate League.
Duke returns 26 of 27 letterwinners for 2012, including nine of 10 starters and 12 pitchers. A complete list of the Blue Devils’ 2011 summer assignments is below.
