PORTLAND, Maine – Former Blue Devil Alex Hassan was named to the 2011 Double-A Eastern League All-Star Team and will participate in the league’s All-Star Game on July 13.
He is the third former Duke player to earn an all-star nod this season, joining 2010 MLB Draft selections Jake Lemmerman (High-A California league) and Christopher Manno (Class-A South Atlantic League), all of which played under seventh-year Duke head coach Sean McNally.
Hassan, an outfielder in his third season of professional baseball, will represent the Eastern Division as one of four outfielders on the team. He leads the Eastern League in on base percentage, ranks second in walks and among the top 10 in hits, batting average, doubles and OPS.
A native of Milton, Mass. (Boston College High School), Hassan was a two-way outfielder and closer at Duke from 2007-09 and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 20th round of the 2009 MLB Draft as a junior. At Duke, he posted a career batting average of .322 while logging 13 saves, nine wins and a 4.24 career ERA. He was named to the 2008 All-ACC Team as a utility player and started 170 games in his three seasons.
In his first season at the Double-A level, Hassan is having the best year of his professional career and is already nearing career highs in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and runs scored. The Eastern League All-Star Game begins at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, N.H., home of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
